According to Interface News on August 14, Apple is planning a strong return to the artificial intelligence field, intending to launch a series of new devices. Apple is developing large robotic arms for retail and manufacturing, preparing a home security ecosystem, and a camera similar to Amazon’s style. Additionally, Apple is working on a new version of Siri with conversational capabilities.
Famous tech leaker Mark Gurman updated the latest outlook on Apple’s product line on August 13 local time.
It is reported thatthe core hardware of Apple’s artificial intelligence strategy is a desktop robot positioned as a “virtual companion”, resembling an “iPad mounted on a movable robotic arm,” capable of rotating to track users in the room. Apple envisions users placing this robot on their desks or kitchen counters to handle work, browse media, or manage daily tasks.
This device can engage in multi-party conversations and interact around the clock while retaining memory of past dialogues.
The prototype of the device features a roughly 7-inch horizontal display, close in size to an iPad mini, with the robotic arm extending the display about half a foot (15 cm) from the base in any direction. Some who have come into contact with the product have referred to it as the “Pixar lamp”—the famous logo of the animation film company. Apple published a paper earlier this year showcasing a lamp-like robot.
It is reported thatthe appearance of Apple’s smart home display is similar to the Google Nest Hub, but more square, featuring a thin black or white frame with rounded corners. The 7-inch display is set on a hemispherical base and supports wall mounting.
Gurman also revealed that during the development of the desktop robot, Apple engineers are extensively using ChatGPT and Google Gemini to build and test features, with the overall development team increasingly utilizing third-party systems.
In addition to the desktop robot, Apple is also developing a home security camera codenamed J450, which supports facial recognition and automated task execution. Apple believes users will install cameras throughout their homes to assist with automation, such as automatically turning off lights when a person leaves a room.
It is reported that Apple’s goal is to compete with Amazon’s Ring and Google Nest. The company has also tested a doorbell that uses facial recognition technology to unlock doors.
Furthermore, Apple is planning a series of new hardware products, including an upcoming ultra-thin phone. In the near future, the company will also launch AI glasses, a foldable phone, a 20th-anniversary iPhone, an improved headset, and a large foldable device that combines a MacBook and an iPad.
According to previous reports from Jiupai News, at the investor conference on August 2, Apple admitted to lagging in AI, but Cook felt it was not a major issue. Cook stated at the investor conference that Apple is not a company that is keen on being the first in the industry, but we can take existing innovative products and transform them into bestsellers that sweep the globe.
Cook also emphasized in his speech that the “cake” of AI will be larger than that of smartphones and the internet, so Apple has currently prioritized the development of AI business. The Apple CEO pointed out that although Apple is not always the first to enter the market, the company has already dominated multiple markets, as evidenced by the Mac, iPhone, iPad, and iPod, indicating that Apple will play a key role in the future transformation of AI.
As of the close on August 13 local time, Apple’s stock price was $233.33 per share, up 1.60%, down 6.49% for the year, with a market capitalization of approximately $3.46 trillion.
