Students and faculty at the Civil Aviation University of China immediately tuned in to the launch live broadcast via television, radio, and the internet, engaging in lively discussions about the impact of the Beidou satellite’s global networking on the civil aviation industry and personal work and study. Among them, members of the “Beidou Application Demonstration Project for Transport Aircraft” closely monitored the launch of the networking satellite.
The “Beidou Application Demonstration Project for Transport Aircraft” was initiated in May 2018, led by the Aircraft Global Tracking and Monitoring Technology Research Center of the School of Electronic Information and Automation at the Civil Aviation University of China, in collaboration with Air China to develop technical solutions. In August 2019, it received project approval from the Civil Aviation Administration. The results of this project will provide technical and data support for the subsequent mass modification of the Beidou system in our country, significantly enhancing the safety monitoring level of our civil aviation, international competitiveness, and voice in the industry, laying an important foundation for the early realization of a flight global tracking and monitoring system with independent intellectual property rights. Currently, the project is progressing steadily.
The successful launch of the last satellite for the global Beidou networking marks the complete deployment of the Beidou-3 global satellite navigation system constellation, laying a more solid foundation for our team’s ongoing Beidou application demonstration project for transport aircraft. Applying Beidou for positioning and tracking of transport aircraft is a concrete action to implement General Secretary Xi Jinping’s important directive of “one system, three capabilities”, which is significant for building China’s civil aviation tracking and monitoring system, enhancing our aviation safety monitoring capabilities and technical equipment support. I am proud of my country’s strength and proud that we have the Beidou system with completely independent intellectual property rights applied to aircraft positioning and tracking.
@Wang Wanwei, Young Teacher of the School of Electronic Information and Automation
Hearing the news of the successful launch of Beidou, I was very excited. After years of hard work, China’s Beidou satellite global navigation system has finally been successfully established, which will have a profound impact on our production and life. Once the Beidou navigation system is widely applied, our smartphones and other smart devices will be able to simultaneously support Beidou and GPS navigation systems, not only improving navigation accuracy but also enhancing reliability. In the near future, the integration of the Beidou navigation system with 5G technology, artificial intelligence technology, autonomous driving technology, and drone delivery technology will accelerate the popularization and development of these new technologies. In special situations such as natural disasters, the Beidou navigation system can also provide us with precise navigation and positioning services, which will be very helpful for disaster relief.
@Wang Peng, Teacher of the Communication Engineering Department, School of Electronic Information and Automation
When I heard the countdown to the satellite launch on the screen, I couldn’t help but feel nervous and excited. What an exhilarating moment, thumbs up for the motherland, love! In people’s impression, Beidou is only about positioning. But for me, as a communication engineering major, it is no longer just that simple. It is related to our communication, seemingly distant, but actually close to us, such as Beidou + 5G, Internet of Everything, etc.The innovation and application of Beidou will make our lives smarter. Chinese Beidou will illuminate the sky of global satellite navigation. And for me, learning never stops!
@Cheng Qiaoling, Student of Communication Engineering, Class of 2018
Chinese Beidou, Serving the World. The successful global networking of Beidou is attributed to the countless scientific workers’ continuous efforts since 1994, relying on the unity, rigor, and innovation spirit of every worker. Similarly, the many successes in civil aviation cannot be separated from the inheritance of contemporary civil aviation spirit. As a student of the Civil Aviation University of China, I should earnestly study professional knowledge, keep the contemporary civil aviation spirit in mind, strive for progress, and strive to contribute to the development and construction of my country in the future.
@Chi Jiaqing, Student of Electronic Information Engineering, CDIO Class of 2018
The completion of the Beidou system networking marks the official establishment of our own global satellite navigation system. For a long time, our country relied on foreign navigation systems, and the powerful Beidou satellite navigation system will help improve the operational efficiency and service capabilities of the civil aviation industry. From my own perspective, my future work is closely related to navigation systems. Seeing such great achievements by my country, I sincerely admire all the scientific researchers, and I hope that through learning, when the baton of civil aviation development is passed to us, we can shoulder the responsibility.
@Li Jiapeng, Student of Traffic Management, Class of 2019
In last semester’s “Navigation and Guidance” class, the teacher’s discussion on the importance of independent innovation left a deep impression on me. The Beidou navigation system is China’s independently developed global satellite navigation system, and it is the third mature satellite navigation system after GPS and GLONASS. The completion of the Beidou networking is exhilarating. The high-quality development of the civil aviation industry also relies on continuously enhanced independent innovation capabilities and mastering core technologies. We are the new force in the civil aviation industry, and we must start solidly learning professional knowledge well and keeping up with the trends, engaging in discussions with teachers on topics of interest to lay the foundation for innovation.

In 1994, the construction of the Beidou satellite navigation system began. Over the past 20 years, our country has organized a total of 44 Beidou launch missions at the Xichang Satellite Launch Center, using the Long March 3A series of carrier rockets to successively send 4 Beidou-1 experimental satellites, 55 Beidou-2 and Beidou-3 networking satellites into their designated orbits, with a success rate of 100%. Especially since the global networking began in 2017, 18 launch missions have been executed in a high-density manner over two and a half years. This year, under the special circumstances of combating the COVID-19 pandemic, the Beidou project has maintained a “dual-line operation” of networking launches and epidemic prevention, effectively promoting the successful conclusion of the Beidou-3 global networking. With strong support from systems such as measurement and control, ground operation control, inter-satellite link operation management, and application verification, all previously launched satellites in orbit have been integrated into the network.
China’s Beidou “Three-Step” Development Strategy
1. By the end of 2000, the Beidou-1 system, also known as the Beidou WeChat Navigation Experimental System, was completed, achieving satellite navigation from nothing to something, providing services to China.
2. By the end of 2012, the Beidou-2 system was completed, achieving regional navigation and providing services to the Asia-Pacific region.
3. In 2020, the Beidou-3 system was completed, establishing “inter-satellite links” and achieving global networking, providing services to the world.
From project approval to implementation, from dual-star positioning to regional networking, and then to global coverage, China’s satellite navigation system construction has undergone over 30 years of exploration and practice. Three generations of Beidou personnel have continued to strive, forging a path of self-reliance,independent innovation, and self-transcendence in development, establishing the largest, most widely covered, highest service performance, and most closely related to people’s lives complex aerospace system in our country, becoming the first major space infrastructure in China to provide public services globally, making significant contributions to the development of the global satellite navigation industry, providing more choices for the global public to share higher quality time-space precision services, and accumulating valuable experience for the modernization of major scientific and technological project management in our country.

After the emergence of the “disruptor” Beidou, currently, in the domestic market, the GPS market share has shrunk from over 95% to 75%. As of the end of 2019, the shipment of domestic Beidou navigation chip modules has exceeded 100 million pieces, and Beidou navigation chips, modules, high-precision boards, and antennas have been exported to over 100 countries and regions.
Currently, more than half of the countries in the world have begun to use the Beidou system. In the future, China Beidou will continue to participate in international satellite navigation affairs, promote multi-system compatibility and sharing, carry out international exchanges and cooperation, and promote Beidou’s overseas applications based on the needs of the global public, sharing the latest development achievements of Beidou.
Chinese Beidou, Serving the World, Benefiting Humanity. Wherever humanity’s dreams chase, we hope to have time-space positioning; wherever humanity’s footsteps reach, we hope to have navigation guidance. By 2035, our country will build a more ubiquitous, more integrated, and smarter comprehensive time-space system, further enhancing time-space information service capabilities, making Chinese contributions for humanity to go deeper and further.
