“The application of 3D printing technology in aircraft
We have reached a scale and engineering level
and are in a leading position in the world
On the new model that we recently flew for the first time,
3D printed parts have already been installed in batches”

Now a leading technology
has gone through many difficulties
Additive manufacturing technology
is the process of forming parts by adding materials layer by layer
This incremental manufacturing method
is commonly known as 3D printing technology
Although this technology is now leading the world
it has gone through many challenges
to reach this point

In 2013
as the demand for new fighter jets in terms of weight reduction, long lifespan
low cost, and rapid response became increasingly urgent
the existing production methods had reached a “ceiling”
At that time
Luoyang had just recently died in the line of duty
When the team needed to break through difficulties
they suddenly lost their backbone
To accelerate the breakthrough of key core technologies
Shenyang Aircraft Corporation established
the Additive Manufacturing “Luoyang Youth Commando”

In the initial stage
the team had no experience to draw from
and the innovation difficulty was extremely high
As a member of the ‘Luoyang Youth Commando’
Li Xiaodan took on the heavy responsibility of leading the team
and in just 28 days, they completed the typical process sample
through the entire process trial production within the company
creating a miracle in the industry
for the production of high-end equipment parts in the shortest time

Li Xiaodan said
For a part to “go from looking like to being usable”
this path is the most difficult
“At that time, we used8 months
to create over 800 pages of experiments
to provide all performance data to demonstrate
that the materials, processes, and parts were qualified
Only then could we install this part
on our aircraft for the first time”

As a team composed of young high-level technical talents
the additive manufacturing team
has fully mastered 3D printing technology
from development, processing to application
Now, additive manufacturing technology
has been implemented in major aircraft production plants in the aviation field
Our country has also become the only one in the world
to achieve the large-scale application of 3D printing manufacturing technology
in aircraft
In the ten years since Luoyang’s departure
a large number of youth have grown and taken over
Li Xiaodan said
The achievements are due to the inspiration of the “Luoyang Spirit”
“When the J-15 carrier-based aircraft was about to be deployed
the problem with the arrestor hook had not been solved
Luoyang led us technical personnel
to list all possible influencing factors
to scrutinize every detail
constantly adjusting the main attack direction and development model
and finally solved this problem
This spirit of courage in the face of difficulties,
overcoming challenges, and striving for excellence
has a particularly great impact on us”

In the past ten years
a large number of ‘Luoyang Youth Commando’ members have rapidly grown
in urgent and difficult tasks
taking on heavy responsibilities and charging ahead
They are fighting on the front lines of product production and technology research and development
significantly promoting the research and production process of various types of aviation weaponry
