Arduino Uno R4: The Next Generation of Open-Source Hardware

Produced by | OSC Open Source Community (ID: oschina2013)

As one of the most popular open-source hardware on the market, the Arduino Uno R3 was launched back in 2010. After more than a decade, this hardware’s performance has become somewhat outdated. While everyone eagerly awaited, Arduino recently officially released the upgraded version of the Arduino Uno R3 – the Arduino Uno R4, which brings significant improvements in processing power, memory, storage, and connectivity.
Arduino Uno R4: The Next Generation of Open-Source Hardware
Comparison of Arduino Uno R4 and R3 Configurations
Uno R4 Uno R3
CPU Renesas RA4M1 (48 MHz, Arm Cortex M4) ATmega328P (16 MHz, AVR)
SRAM 32K 2K
Flash Memory 256K 32K
Max Voltage 24V 20V
USB Type-C (also supports power supply, max voltage of 5V) Type-B
To ensure compatibility, the Uno R4 maintains the same pins and layout as the Uno R3. The CPU has been upgraded to the 32-bit Renesas RA4M1, running at 48MHz; this is a significant performance increase compared to the previous 8-bit, 16MHz ATmega328P processor. The Uno R4 is equipped with 32K of SRAM, which is 16 times more than the 2K in the Uno R3. It will also have 256K of onboard NAND, while the R3 had 32K.
Since the new processor is based on the Arm Cortex M4 architecture, while the previous processor was based on the AVR RISC platform, there may be some software compatibility issues, and libraries optimized for specific processors or architectures may need to be updated.
The Uno R4 comes standard with a round charger that supports a maximum voltage of 24V, a slight increase from the previous 20V. The Type-C also supports power supply but only up to 5V.
The release date for the Arduino Uno R4 is set for May this year, with pricing yet to be announced. There will be two versions available: Minima and Wi-Fi, the latter of which will feature an Espressif S3 module, supporting both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity.
If you want to be among the first to purchase the Uno R4, you can visit the official website now to join the waiting list, and Arduino will notify you when the product is released. The official also launched an Early Adopter program, which will offer a free Uno R4 to authors or maintainers of Arduino libraries or popular open-source projects.
In the official photo of the Uno R4 (shown above), Arduino has covered some areas of the PCB with yellow and teal, stating that they will only reveal what is hidden in these areas close to the release date, hoping to bring some surprises to users at that time.
