In patch 7.14, the significant buff to armor penetration items has led to a resurgence in the pick rate of Jhin, who can now effectively utilize armor penetration builds. In an environment dominated by critical strike builds, Jhin remains one of the few marksmen capable of adopting an armor penetration strategy. The recent rise in Jhin’s pick rate has also introduced a new starting item build that includes Doran’s Ring, which is surprising for many players. This is indeed a popular strategy among high-ranked players in the Korean server, with many familiar players using it. Let’s delve into how this works.
Strategy Analysis
Here, we have selected a screenshot of a match where Jhin, using Doran’s Ring, ranked third against a Diamond II player. It is evident that many players are opting for Doran’s Ring on Jhin. Additionally, well-known players like SMLZ and Deft have also been using Doran’s Ring Jhin recently.
The core of Doran’s Ring Jhin lies in the choice of starting items, abandoning the traditional builds of Long Sword with three health potions, Doran’s Blade with one health potion, or Doran’s Shield for the new build of Doran’s Ring plus two health potions.
Abandoning the traditional starting items means having less attack power but gaining an additional 15 ability power. Looking at Jhin’s three basic skills, the Q skill provides a bonus of 0.4/0.45/0.5/0.55/0.6 total AD, while also having a 0.6 AP scaling. The E skill offers a total AD scaling of 1.2 and an AP scaling of 1.0. However, when comparing the damage output of the Q and E skills, even with the maximum attack power from the Long Sword, the damage increase is still less than that provided by Doran’s Ring. Furthermore, Doran’s Ring costs 400 gold, providing 15 ability power, 60 health points, and slight mana regeneration. Compared to Doran’s Blade, it allows for an extra health potion at the start and provides an additional 60 health points over the Long Sword, making it a balanced choice between Doran’s Blade and Long Sword. While Doran’s Shield also costs 400 gold and offers superior health regeneration, it lacks attack power and ability power, and its passive 5 additional damage does not affect champions, making it less effective in combat compared to Doran’s Ring. As for last-hitting, players familiar with Jhin know that he typically last-hits using both basic attacks and skills. His base auto-attack damage is already quite high, and even without Doran’s Ring, Long Sword, or Doran’s Shield, it does not significantly impact performance. However, the damage from the Q and E skills is higher, and the additional mana regeneration enhances his ability to trade in lane.
Overall, Doran’s Ring Jhin indeed has its merits, which likely explains why many ADC players in Korea are choosing it.
Jhin’s Build Strategy
In previous versions, Jhin typically followed a dual build path, starting with Youmuu’s Ghostblade and then transitioning into crit builds like Rapid Firecannon and Infinity Edge. Youmuu’s Ghostblade, Rapid Firecannon, and Infinity Edge were considered the standard three-item build for Jhin during the armor penetration-focused version. After the changes in patch 7.14, I recommend either skipping Youmuu’s and going straight for Duskblade, then following the original build path of Rapid Firecannon and Infinity Edge, or reverting to the previous version’s extreme penetration build, opting for Youmuu’s plus Duskblade. Duskblade is incredibly strong in the current version, with the Night Stalker passive providing high fixed damage, and the built-in 0.25 seconds of 99% slow effect makes it viable even without the movement speed boost from Youmuu’s. Of course, for players who are accustomed to the movement speed boost from Youmuu’s, it remains a viable option since Jhin requires high movement speed to maintain control in fights.
Items are static, but players are dynamic, so ultimately, the build choices lie with the players. The current popularity of Doran’s Ring Jhin in high-tier Korean matches has its reasons, and whether you choose to emulate it or stick to traditional build paths depends on your own perspective on this starting item.
