A significant victory for the open-source community!

Following Germany, China now aims to replace Windows with Linux on 50 million PCs!

If you have been closely following Linux news, you may have heard about Germany’s decision last year to switch from Windows to Linux on over 25,000 PCs. At that time, the community predicted that many other countries might follow suit.

China recently announced its plan to replace Windows with Linux on over 50 million PCs, a prediction that can be considered quite accurate!

While both countries share the same ultimate goal, their reasons for doing so differ.

Germany’s motivation is to save licensing costs for the government and promote open-source software. In contrast, China aims to “remove foreign operating systems” so that they can maintain the operating system domestically.

While this is a huge victory for Linux and open-source software, it spells bad news for laptop/PC manufacturers like Dell and HP, as well as software companies like Adobe and Microsoft (except for Lenovo and Kingsoft). While manufacturers will be forced to be considered “foreign” companies, local companies like Lenovo, Huawei, and Kingsoft may see rapid market growth in the coming years.

Here’s what Bloomberg had to say.

According to Bloomberg, if government agencies and companies replace foreign-branded computers, Lenovo could significantly boost its sales. This could reach over 50 million PCs in the next two years.

However, I hope that government agencies will genuinely use these domestic commercial Linux systems after purchasing them, rather than buying them only to replace the motherboard and format them to install Windows instead.
