Why IIoT Data Is Important for Industry

As connected devices also appear in the industrial field and applications, the term “Industrial Internet of Things” (IIoT) has been established. From the user’s perspective, this term describes an environment where industrial intelligent devices can connect to the network so that they can exchange valuable data for decision-making purposes.

In IIoT installations, countless types of data can be exchanged—from environmental data (temperature, humidity, etc.) to operational data (speed, flow, etc.) to network data (packets, etc.).

Most of this data may be useful to the collector, but how can we determine if the data is useful? The collected data should meet the following criteria:

Valuable: Measuring something worth understanding/improving;
Accessible: Available for decision-makers or processes;
Transferable: Seamlessly exchanged between different systems;
Contextual: Understandable by people or decision-making systems;
Secure: Only accessible to authorized systems.

For data to be useful, it must also provide valuable insights that can be translated into action. For example:

As businesses become more data-centric, users must implement appropriate infrastructure to leverage the vast amounts of useful data from IIoT systems.

How Should Data Be Collected?

Due to the value of this data, businesses often refer to it as “gold.”

Consider how to mine this gold. Before it becomes a valuable asset, it goes through a unique process:

Mining
Building Infrastructure
Disassembling
Promoting
Organizing

At each step of this complex process, tools (e.g., mining tools) are used to determine the value of the assets (land) involved in the process.

Like a gold mine, the IIoT data mining process is complex but follows similar principles. To make IIoT data valuable to users’ businesses, the right tools must be in place to collect and process data to gather useful insights from affected assets.
