Transforming a $1 Trash Can into a Smart Trash Can with Micro:bit

First, focus on programming to avoid getting lost in learning.

For just one dollar, you can transform an ordinary trash can into a smart trash can. Tech enthusiasts can change the world φ(>ω<*) Come and learn this new skill with the cat star~

Micro:bit Transforms into a Smart Trash Can

Recently, I bought a car trash can for just one dollar (and it was free shipping!).

So the question is, how can we maximize the use of something that costs just one dollar?

I thought about using Micro:bit combined with Kittenbot’s star product, Robot:bit, to give the trash can new life, turning it into a cool gesture-sensing smart trash can!…φ(๑˃∀˂๑)♪ Learning is everything to me.

Curious cat fans, just read on with me~

Materials List:

1. Robot:bit + Micro:bit

2. 9G servo and servo arm

3. Several Dupont wires

4. Ultrasonic sensor

5. Ultrasonic adapter board

6. 3D printed mechanical link

7. 3D printed support parts

8. Fixing screws (2 M3X6 screws, 3 M2X8 self-tapping screws with washers for the servo arm)

9. Fixing nuts (1 M3 hex lock nut, 1 M3 hex nut)

10. One dollar free shipping car trash can

11. 2MMX15MM shaft (can be replaced with a toothpick)

For STL files, please consult the official group or design them yourself.

Here are the production steps:

Step One

Since the mechanical structure is designed by the engineer, you creative ones can also design it into different shapes. If you download existing STL files, you can print all the necessary 3D printed parts.

First, install the mechanical link part, which is the key part that controls the trash can’s opening and closing. If you have printed the parts, you will definitely be able to install them correctly due to the simple structure, combined with the servo. The installed effect is shown in the picture below. Here, please give the servo a predetermined angle, where the main arm link is horizontal at 0 degrees. This keeps the servo in an ideal working state.

Step Two

After installing the mechanical link, it must be fixed to the trash can. Open corresponding holes on the trash can as shown in the picture. You can use scissors or a screwdriver to drill, or use a small electric drill. Since the plastic lid is relatively thin, drilling holes is not too difficult.

Step Three

Fix the link to the lid of the trash can as shown in the steps in the picture. First, fix the tail end of the main arm to the back cover, and then use screws to fix it to the front cover.

5. Install the external support for the main control board

Now we have completed the structural part of our smart trash can.

Step Four

Take out the prepared ultrasonic module and place it on the base, and place it and the Robot:bit with micro:bit on the table, ready for wiring.

2. Place the required equipment properly

Step Five

Take out the prepared Dupont wires. Here, we use the S3 pin for the servo, and connect the servo wire to the corresponding position on the Robot:bit’s S3 header. According to the previous tutorial, when connecting the ultrasonic sensor, connect the V pin on the adapter board to the 5V pin on the Robot:bit. The pin marked as 1 on the adapter board connects to A1 on the Robot:bit.

Adapter board V—-5V

Adapter board 1—-A1

Adapter board G—-GND

Now our wiring is complete! Finally, let’s write the program to implement gesture recognition quickly, please look forward to the next breakdown.
