Recently, the National Internet Information Office has drawn attention to security risks related to backdoors in NVIDIA’s computing chips. Meanwhile, more insider information has emerged regarding the U.S. embedding “backdoors” in chips. On August 13, Reuters published an exclusive report revealing that the U.S. secretly installs trackers in artificial intelligence-related chips to monitor instances of “chips being shipped to China”.
According to reports, two insiders disclosed that the U.S. government has secretly installed trackers in exported artificial intelligence (AI) chips and other goods to detect whether these items are being sent to destinations subject to U.S. export restrictions. The insiders stated that this initiative is aimed at China, and the trackers assist the Trump administration in prosecuting violators of export controls.
Trackers have been used by U.S. law enforcement for decades as an investigative tool, previously employed to track restricted products like aircraft parts. An insider indicated that in recent years, the U.S. has begun using trackers to combat the “illegal transportation” of semiconductors.
Additionally, five individuals related to the AI server supply chain reported that they are aware of trackers being used in the server shipments of Dell and Super Micro, which contain chips from NVIDIA and AMD. These individuals stated that the trackers are typically hidden within the product packaging of the servers. Two individuals involved in the server supply chain described a case from 2024 where a batch of Dell servers equipped with NVIDIA chips not only had large trackers on the shipping boxes but also concealed smaller, more discreet tracking devices within the packaging and even inside the servers.

Insiders stated that the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Industry and Security, which oversees export controls and enforcement, is typically involved in such actions, and other agencies like the FBI may also participate. Regarding the U.S. restrictions on the export of advanced AI chips to China, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian stated on the 11th that China opposes the politicization, weaponization, and toolization of technology and economic issues, and firmly opposes malicious blockades and suppression against China. This practice disrupts the stability of global supply chains and does not serve the interests of any party.
