Having foldable smartphones, tablets, and televisions – the dream is almost within reach. To ensure the reliable operation of this new technology, it is now essential to use robust conductive materials in touch displays, such as the new material Clevios™HY E launched by Heraeus Electronic Chemicals, making the dream come true!
To make displays foldable, each component must be very sturdy and flexible. With the fundamental shift from glass to plastic for displays, the main challenge is using the key technical materials necessary for foldable displays. “Our conductive materials already meet the electronic and mechanical performance standards required for foldable displays,” said Dr. Armin Sautter, head of technical service demonstrations at Heraeus Electronic Chemicals.
The new material Clevios™HY E launched by Heraeus Electronic Chemicals is a unique hybrid material made from conductive polymers (PEDOT) and silver nanowires that significantly enhance conductivity, allowing for smaller bending radii. In tests, films coated with Clevios™HY E can achieve at least 300,000 bends at a radius of 1 mm without affecting their conductivity. Excellent and stable conductivity is crucial for large displays. With such a small bending radius, it becomes possible to manufacture ultra-thin smartphones and tablets with multiple folds.
Even during the manufacturing process of displays, we can provide strong support, such as when they adjust the materials according to their needs and develop mass production processes,” explained Dr. Armin Sautter. Heraeus Electronic Chemicals offers a wide range of options in its testing laboratory in Taiwan to test conductive polymers on substrates. Additionally, manufacturers’ developers can freely design their touch screens, such as hiding touch sensors within the display film.
In the testing laboratory in Taiwan, the development team collaborated with Taiwanese touch screen manufacturers to create an 8-inch foldable touch screen prototype, showcasing the true appearance of future displays. “This prototype fully demonstrates how refined and sturdy our materials are. Now, we are looking for more technical partners to realize more applications,” Dr. Armin Sautter concluded.
The foldable screen will bring significant changes to some existing mobile phone supply chains, involving various types of companies such as terminal, display touch companies, flexible films, FPC, flexible adhesives, hinges, and equipment such as lasers, dispensing, bonding, and testing.
