Frank Ko, Chairman and CEO of E Ink (EIH), a global leader in electronic paper, recently stated that in the era of the Internet of Things (IoT), electronic paper solutions could become the most competitive display products for terminal devices.
Ko pointed out that various IoT applications are gradually penetrating all aspects of scenes and living environments, including retail, medical, transportation, education, food, clothing, and many other industries.
The latest developments in IoT networks prove that the previous notion that IoT applications do not need display devices as interfaces is incorrect. On the contrary, the use of display products is essential in all aspects of IoT networks, and the effectiveness of IoT devices will be better displayed on screens.
Initially launched smart speakers did not come equipped with any screens, but many recently released smart speakers now feature relevant displays, indicating that display devices will always be the most important interface between humans and machines.
But what kind of display products are needed in the IoT era? Ko pointed out that since display devices will be installed in many power-hungry locations, the use of low-power IoT displays is a prerequisite; in addition, these displays should also support wireless charging to ensure integrity while being easy to use outdoors. In this case, electronic paper solutions will be the best choice for IoT displays. Because even when the power is cut off, they can continue to display images. Furthermore, electronic paper displays only consume power when the patterns on the screen change.
Previously, e-book readers could last a month on a single charge. EIH is currently working on developing battery-free electronic paper solutions and has stated that EIH is ready to launch this technology.
Unlike LCDs that require backlight modules or self-emissive OLED displays, electronic paper displays, as a new type of reflective display, do not require any backlight at all. They use ambient light sources to reflect objects into the viewer’s eyes. Compared to other display technologies, electronic paper solutions also provide clear images in sunlight, making them suitable for use as billboards and public information displays.
Electronic paper displays based on flexible plastic substrates can achieve special irregular cutting, and EIH is currently working to establish collaboration agreements with related companies to customize flexible electronic paper displays.
At the same time, EIH is currently providing its advanced color electronic paper (ACeP) solution samples to customers for verification, which will lay the foundation for EIH to begin mass production of color electronic paper display products by the end of 2018 or early 2019.
