Hello everyone, welcome to the second part of this week’s Translation Weekly Briefing.
First, a reminder that the “Translation” mini-program has added a “Subscription” feature. Once enabled, you will receive daily notifications reminding you to check the day’s important news.
Let’s take a look at a hot news item.
When exhausted, it feels warm when someone cheers you on. However, the encouragement from these smart watches is actually a warning—because resting in place for 20 minutes is considered a violation of their management regulations.
Of course, some workers expressed dissatisfaction: “As long as we do our job and keep the roads clean, why go through this?” But the management disagrees, stating, “If you don’t keep moving, the work won’t be done properly.”
This issue sparked public outrage once reported by the media. Some netizens commented, “Even rapists don’t wear smart bands, yet laborers are monitored first.” In response to the public outcry, the local authorities have announced that the 20 minute reminder function has been canceled.
We all know that the cleanliness of a city’s roads relies on the labor and responsibility of sanitation workers, not on nitpicking management regulations and monitoring devices. Surveillance may backfire, causing workers to show up without putting in effort.
Now that the reminder function has been canceled, has the location tracking function been canceled as well? It seems sanitation workers are still working under surveillance. This thought makes me a bit uneasy; they say technology makes life better, but technology without empathy—will it improve or worsen the situation for laborers? It’s hard to say.
Today, sanitation workers are equipped with smart monitoring; will the next be you or me?
Now, let’s look at another set of news.
Acute Stress Reaction, also known as Acute Stress Disorder (ASD), refers to a transient mental disorder that occurs within minutes or hours after experiencing a sudden and severe traumatic event, generally alleviating within a few days or a week, and not exceeding 1 month. ASD can occur at any age, but is more common among young adults.
Industry insiders suggest that while providing psychological counseling, it is best to change the environment for survivors and avoid frequent media interviews to prevent secondary trauma.
Experiencing an acute stress reaction is normal; it is not a sign of weakness. We wish the firefighting heroes a swift recovery and hope they return safely after each mission.
The individuals involved have given up on applying for state compensation, and their wish for a peaceful life should be respected. The discussions surrounding “justifiable defense” sparked by this case continue.
From the “Kunshan Counterattack Case” to the “Zhao Yu Heroic Act Case” and the “Laiyuan Counterattack Case,” the Chinese are undergoing a revolution in the concept of “justifiable defense.” Once, we saw news like this—”Injured a molester and was criminally detained,” “Caught a thief at home at night, causing the thief to fall and die, charged with negligent homicide,” “Husband witnessed his wife being raped and killed the suspect, sentenced to life imprisonment.”
These cases have all been included in the Supreme Procuratorate’s work report. Wang Songmiao, director of the Supreme Procuratorate’s office, explained that these three cases were ultimately recognized as justifiable defense by the procuratorial authorities, sending a strong signal: to use legal means to ensure that justifiable defense stands tall, to act decisively when necessary, and not to yield an inch to illegal acts.
Justifiable defense is not about using violence to counter violence, but about responding to injustice with justice. Justifiable defense cannot deviate from common sense, and victims should not be blamed. These cases have raised the “water level” of people’s rights to justifiable defense, which is encouraging.
This year, global stock markets have generally rebounded, with the A-shares leading the world. Many people are eager to try their hand at investing. However, as many seasoned investors say, in a bull market, retail investors are more likely to suffer significant losses.
In a bear market, retail investors are reluctant to enter the market, and even if they do, they won’t invest much, so their losses are limited. But in a bull market, everything seems profitable, leading every participant to quickly elevate their self-assessment, mistakenly believing they are stock market geniuses.
Faster than the rise in self-assessment is the rise in desire: “At low levels, profit experiences are few, self-assessments are low, ambitions are small, strategies are cautious, and positions are conservative. As stock prices rise, profit experiences increase, self-assessments rise rapidly, strategies become more aggressive, and positions and leverage increase continuously.”
Once a bear market arrives, all that remains is a mess.
Some people buy houses, considering location, price, and community, weighing their options carefully, but when it comes to stocks, they act impulsively, throwing money around. The stock market is not an ATM; it is a form of investment. Before investing in the stock market, one should at least understand the basics of the stock market and know how to analyze a company.
“The stock market has risks; entering the market requires caution.” Every retail investor should mentally repeat this several times before investing.
That concludes this week’s Translation Weekly Briefing. Finally, here’s a beautiful image to wish everyone a good mood.
