At this year’s I/O Developer Conference, Google announced that they are collaborating with Samsung to develop a new platform for smartwatches. However, Google did not disclose more information about the platform at that time. Yesterday at MWC21, Samsung finally showcased the results of their collaboration with Google – One UI Watch. “Samsung and Google have a long history of collaboration, and every time we work together, we significantly improve the consumer experience,” said Sameer Samat, a vice president of product at Google.

From the naming of the system, it is clear that Samsung has high expectations for this system – it aims to create a closer connection between smartphones and smartwatches. Currently, it seems that Samsung has achieved this. “One UI Watch and the new unified platform will bring users a brand new Galaxy Watch experience.”The connection between the smartphone and the smartwatch is reflected in the data interchange. If a user downloads new software on their phone, the smartwatch will automatically download the corresponding app and synchronize data with the phone. For example, if a user blocks a phone number on their phone, their smartwatch will not receive calls from that number. Conversely, if you block someone on the smartwatch, that number will also remain in the blacklist on your phone.
Previously, Samsung’s smartwatches almost all used their own Tizen operating system, which had the major drawback of lacking support for third-party apps. The new One UI Watch effectively addresses this issue: Samsung brings users the Play Store, allowing them to directly access third-party apps such as Adidas Running and Spotify from the smartwatch.
In addition, Samsung has integrated the existing Wear OS and Samsung Tizen systems to improve power consumption at the kernel level, so the battery life of the next-generation Galaxy Watch equipped with One UI Watch is highly anticipated. Furthermore, Samsung will introduce a watch face design tool that allows designers to create new watch faces more easily. These watch faces will be added to Samsung’s ever-growing collection, giving users more personalized options.
This collaboration with Google undoubtedly injects a boost into Samsung’s wearable devices. Samsung stated that the Galaxy Watch equipped with this system will be released later this year.
