In October last year, the third-generation Snapdragon 8 flagship platform was officially unveiled at the 2023 Snapdragon Summit event. The official introduction shows that the third-generation Snapdragon 8 adopts a 1+5+2 architecture, based on a 4nm process, with the super-large core reaching a maximum frequency of 3.3GHz, along with the Snapdragon X75 modem and Wi-Fi 7. Performance has improved by 30% compared to the previous generation, with energy efficiency increased by 20%, GPU performance enhanced by 25%, and energy efficiency also improved by 25%. For the first time, it supports global illumination based on hardware ray tracing, compatible with Unreal Engine 5 and 240 FPS gaming.Subsequently, flagship devices equipped with the third-generation Snapdragon 8 have been successively released. Currently, the launch of flagship-level new products has temporarily come to a halt, and more devices at other price points will be released soon.Meanwhile, another new product from Qualcomm has recently surfaced with related leaks, expected to support these devices.
According to blogger @数码闲聊站, in a leak today, a chip product referred to as SM8635 is expected to arrive soon, which will adjust the scale and frequency in line with the SM8650 architecture, with AnTuTu scores exceeding SM8550, making it unbeatable in its performance class, with detailed specifications expected in March.
Among them, SM8650 is the well-known third-generation Snapdragon 8 flagship platform, while SM8550 is the previous generation’s second-generation Snapdragon 8 mobile platform. This means that the performance of the SM8635 chip will surpass that of the second-generation Snapdragon 8. Based on the performance of the devices and architectural information, it should be positioned slightly below the third-generation Snapdragon 8.
Earlier leaks from the same blogger mentioned that “the SM8635 will exceed performance expectations in the mid-range segment, with a 1.5K ultra-narrow straight screen new device as the first launch + exclusive period, also featuring a high-density large battery starting with 5, no plastic bracket + plastic middle frame + glass body, currently with a maximum of 16GB LPDDR5X + 1TB UFS 4.0~” and “seeing a mysterious mid-range device configuration with a 1.5K curved screen + metal middle frame + SM8635 flagship chip, upgrading the self-developed imaging architecture before and after, stay tuned for more updates~”.
The leak did not mention specific new products that will be equipped with this chip, but speculation suggests that the first device to feature this chip will likely be a new model from Redmi. However, there has been no confirmed official news yet, so interested users should stay tuned.
Additionally, aside from the newly exposed SM8635 chip, there have also been related leaks about the next-generation fourth-generation Snapdragon 8 flagship platform.According to news from the same blogger, “SM8750 – Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 codename SUN, TSMC 3nm, CPU 2*Phoenix L + 6*Phoenix M, the current design performance improvement of the self-developed CPU architecture is significant”.
According to the leak, the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chip, codenamed “SUN”, will be built on TSMC’s 3nm process, with a CPU architecture of 2*Phoenix L + 6*Phoenix M, and the current design performance improvement of the self-developed CPU architecture is significant. It is reported that Qualcomm has revealed that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chip will use Qualcomm’s self-developed Oryon CPU core. At the same time, the cost of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 may also increase. However, since there is currently no more definitive official news, the actual situation of the new products remains to be confirmed later.
