According to XDA reports, Qualcomm’s next-generation flagship SoC will be named Snapdragon 875, which may adopt a combination of Cortex X1 super core + Cortex A78 big core (the leak also claims that Samsung’s next-generation Exynos flagship SoC will also adopt the combination of Cortex X1 + Cortex A78, which will replace the Exynos 990).
Starting from Snapdragon 855, Qualcomm introduced a “1+3+4” tri-cluster architecture, consisting of one super core + three big cores + four efficiency cores. For example, Snapdragon 865 uses 1 high-frequency Cortex A77 + 3 Cortex A77 + 4 Cortex A55 efficiency cores, where both the super core and big core are Cortex A77.
This time, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 875 may bring a truly significant super core, Cortex X1, which ARM claims will provide 30% higher peak performance than Cortex-A77.
Compared to Cortex-A78, Cortex-X1’s integer computing performance has improved by 23%, and Cortex-X1’s machine learning capability is twice that of Cortex-A78.
If Qualcomm Snapdragon 875 uses Cortex X1 + Cortex A78, it is expected to continue the “1+3+4” combination, once again refreshing its performance record in the Android camp.
As usual, Qualcomm Snapdragon 875 is expected to debut in Q4 of this year. Earlier leaks suggested that the Snapdragon 875 might be revealed early, but considering the pandemic has not yet been resolved, whether it will be released early remains uncertain.
There is no doubt that the Qualcomm Snapdragon 875 will be the standard for Android flagships in 2021, and Xiaomi is likely to be the first manufacturer to launch it, which is worth looking forward to.
