Pros and Cons of Chemical and Physical Tempered Glass: A Comprehensive Guide

Pros and Cons of Chemical and Physical Tempered Glass: A Comprehensive Guide

Source: CMF Technology Exploration

Today, the application of tempered glass in fields such as 3C digital products, smart home appliances, smart home, IoT hardware, and new energy vehicles is becoming increasingly common, with tempered glass present in almost all display touch scenarios.

Pros and Cons of Chemical and Physical Tempered Glass: A Comprehensive Guide

In the 3C digital field, chemical tempered glass is predominant, with applications including smartphone back covers, 2.5D glass, 3D glass, camera lens glass, laptop touch screen glass, and vehicle touch navigation glass. The thickness of chemical tempered glass generally ranges from 0.38, 0.55, 0.65, 0.8, 0.9/0.95, 1.0, 1.2, 1.5, 1.8, 2.0, 2.5 mm, with high-end flagship models primarily using imported glass such as Corning Gorilla Glass, Schott, and Asahi Glass, while mid-range machines mostly use domestic glasses from companies like Luobo, Nanbo, and Xuhong.

Pros and Cons of Chemical and Physical Tempered Glass: A Comprehensive Guide

In the fields of smart home appliances, smart home design, photovoltaic industry, medical devices, and industrial applications, physical tempered thick glass is mainly used. For example, the glass panels of refrigerators, rice cookers, kitchen appliances, smart locks, and smart homes are all made of physical tempered glass, generally with a thickness of over 2.8 mm.

Pros and Cons of Chemical and Physical Tempered Glass: A Comprehensive Guide

Both chemical tempered glass and physical tempered glass have their own advantages and disadvantages, and the choice mainly depends on the specific usage scenario. How to integrate cross-industry processes and optimize upgrades is key to better meeting customer needs.

Tempered glass is a common type of glass product, but many people do not know that there are two processing techniques for tempered glass: chemical tempering and physical tempering. Both processes have unique advantages, which will be briefly introduced below.

Physical tempered glass is a widely used type of glass, typically used for building curtain wall glass, furniture glass, etc. The principle of physical tempering involves heating the glass above its strain point and quickly cooling the surface uniformly. The surface state freezes, and as the glass inside gradually cools, the previously cooled surface restricts the internal contraction, resulting in compressive stress on the surface and tensile stress inside the glass.

Chemical tempering refers to the method of increasing glass strength using chemical principles, often specifically referring to the use of low-temperature ion exchange principles to enhance glass strength, also known as the ion exchange method. The processing process involves immersing the glass in high-temperature molten salt below its strain point, where small-volume alkali metal ions on the glass surface exchange with larger-volume alkali metal ions in the molten salt, resulting in compressive stress on the glass surface and thus enhancing its strength.

Currently, physical tempered glass is more commonly used in the market. Chemical tempering has high energy consumption and cost, and when broken, it does not shatter into small pieces like physical tempered glass, hence it is not classified as safety glass. However, chemical tempered glass has its own characteristics, such as being suitable for tempered thin glass, while physical tempered thin glass is prone to deformation. Chemical tempered glass also features high strength, uniform stress, no stress spots, dense surface structure, high chemical stability, good thermal stability, good flatness, no deformation, no spontaneous explosion, and superior performance.

With the widespread commercial use of 5G, the era of the Internet of Things is upon us, with more and more terminal manufacturers involved in IoT hardware. Tempered glass has a special texture that is transparent, cold, and high-end. The integration of traditional manufacturing processes with modern advanced technology has enriched CMF technology on glass surfaces, not only through traditional silk printing and painting but also through the combination of nano-embossing and optical texture integration, making glass surface decoration more stunning.

Whether it is a novel trendy product or an industry application, smart home appliances, or smart home design, creative texture designers combine aesthetic design and optical texture design with customer and user usage scenarios, exploring user pain points to provide more temperature and aesthetically pleasing full-scene solutions, creating value for customers and users, allowing us to go further on the path of CMF technology exploration.
