Nothing is Uncopyable, Not Even Electronic Fuel Injection ECUs

♻︎ With so much motorcycle news, let’s hear what Ouyie has to say ♻︎

Back in March 2018, before the implementation of the National IV standard, we predicted in an article what situations might arise under the trend of mandatory electronic fuel injection.

Of course, the above predictions only mentioned the positive aspects; as for the negative aspects, what is bound to come will eventually come, which is only reasonable.

For example, mandatory electronic fuel injection will eliminate a batch of counterfeit manufacturers that can only assemble or purchase carburetors. However, in reality, these manufacturers only need to produce one electronic fuel injection motorcycle to apply for the catalog, while the market versions can all be carbureted. This self-certification behavior allows them to obtain National IV qualifications without increasing costs.

If you ask how to handle vehicle registration and inspection, wouldn’t that expose the issue? Simple, just find a broker; the dealership can handle everything.

For instance, mandatory electronic fuel injection will increase the production of electronic fuel injection components, leading to lower prices for electronic fuel injection systems. Eventually, everyone will be able to use affordable and high-quality electronic fuel injection systems. However, the fact is that the prices of electronic fuel injection systems are indeed decreasing because some people have started to counterfeit them.

We must admit the “wisdom” and “bravery” of the Chinese people; as long as there is a loophole, someone will take risks. Personally, I despise this behavior because from a principled standpoint, counterfeiting is unfair.

You can imagine it as playing a game where someone is using cheats; you spend thousands of hours honing your skills, only to encounter a cheater in every match. Would you still feel like playing? If the game developers turn a blind eye, eventually, no one will play the game anymore, which is the worst outcome due to unfairness.

The more fair and just a society is, the stronger people’s sense of happiness and the higher their happiness index.

Producing counterfeit electronic fuel injection systems is unfair to legitimate manufacturers. If counterfeit products prevail, who will seriously develop better products? Everyone will just counterfeit.

Recently, a company named Longjie Electronics, which specializes in manufacturing motorcycle electronic fuel injection ECUs, has come forward to strongly criticize the “peers” who counterfeit.

Nothing is Uncopyable, Not Even Electronic Fuel Injection ECUs

Longjie Electronics (ROJO) is a company focused on the research, development, and manufacturing of motorcycle electronic fuel injection systems, and it is one of the few companies in China dedicated to developing electronic fuel injection systems for off-road racing, closely collaborating with leading domestic off-road vehicle brands such as Huayang and climbing vehicle brand Tenna.

In its statement, Longjie mentioned the patent number ZL 2019 2 0738178.4 for the ECU and electronic fuel injection system components suitable for civilian scooter models, with counterfeit products originating from several factories in Wenzhou.

This batch of counterfeit products infringes on Longjie Electronics’ legal rights and intellectual property, but it poses significant safety risks for consumers and users. The counterfeits use a large number of low-cost, inferior components, resulting in a high failure rate. Additionally, to utilize the core control function code of the electronic fuel injection system, the counterfeit products inevitably modify part of the code logic. The deep protection encryption system of the ECU, upon detecting abnormal intrusions, will automatically destroy part of the core functional space and may randomly trigger some functional anomalies, failing to meet normal emission standards and economic efficiency, and even endangering user safety. The abnormal behaviors caused by these protective mechanisms are difficult to present through diagnostic instruments.

After the implementation of the National IV standard, the impact on the motorcycle industry is enormous. Manufacturers, dealers, and consumers are gradually coming to understand the electronic fuel injection system. Some manufacturers still perceive the electronic fuel injection system in the same way as during the carburetor era, believing that electronic fuel injection is not much different and only considering low-priced products. Some motorcycle dealers think that as long as there is electronic fuel injection, there will be no problems.

As a company that has focused on electronic fuel injection systems since its establishment in 2003, Longjie Electronics believes that counterfeit and inferior products may bring certain benefits to manufacturers and dealers in the short term, but in the long run, they pose great harm to consumers and the industry. Longjie Electronics also hopes that manufacturers, dealers, and consumers will pay attention to electronic fuel injection systems and adopt genuine electronic fuel injection systems.

The above is a summary of Longjie Electronics’ statement.

We can see that Longjie mainly mentioned two things. The first is that low-quality counterfeit electronic fuel injection systems offer no guarantees and may not even be as reliable as carburetors. Surely, no one wants to buy a junk electronic fuel injection motorcycle. However, this issue is not difficult to resolve because the models using counterfeit electronic fuel injection systems are almost all products from counterfeit manufacturers. This means that as long as you purchase products from first, second, or third-tier manufacturers, you will not encounter the hidden dangers of counterfeit electronic fuel injection motorcycles.

The second point is the key: low-quality counterfeit electronic fuel injection systems, due to their low prices, greatly erode the market sales of legitimate electronic fuel injection manufacturers. In fact, this second part is directed at vehicle manufacturers. Longjie stated: “Even if you are the boss of a counterfeit manufacturer, it is best to purchase genuine electronic fuel injection products, as both quality and after-sales service are guaranteed.”

Of course, we can never convince those profit-driven counterfeit manufacturers; they will still use extremely low-priced counterfeit electronic fuel injection systems, as maximizing profits is the most important thing.

Actually, Ouyie wants to take this opportunity to tell everyone that we are not without serious research and craftsmanship spirit, but these companies have suffered some unfair treatment in a poor market environment. Using the power of the media to raise their voices is the main point of this article.

After reading this article, some people may feel powerless, as every industry encounters issues of counterfeiting and plagiarism. It seems that this problem cannot be solved in mainland China. However, I believe that systems can change human nature. A few years ago, I traveled to Thailand and spent a whole week there without seeing a single motorcycle run a red light. Do you think this is because the Thai people have high quality? I don’t think so. If a Thai person lived in China for half a year, they would probably run red lights too. Conversely, if a Chinese person lived in Thailand for half a year, their traffic awareness might improve.

The reason is simple: if everyone does not run red lights, would you dare to run one?

So why don’t Thai people run red lights on motorcycles? I believe the system plays a significant role, such as the driving test system and the fine system. If we start from these two aspects, it will definitely have an immediate effect.

The behavior of manufacturers self-certifying their products is known to me; do you think the police are unaware? But they don’t check. Openly and brazenly counterfeiting electronic fuel injection systems to crush competitors, what’s the point of applying for a patent certificate? Because no one cares.

Deeper content is not suitable for discussion in this article; everyone understands it in their hearts.

In the end, we all look forward to justice, but hopefully, it won’t be too late.
