The new infrastructure has sounded the horn for development, bringing significant opportunities for emerging industries such as 5G and the Internet of Things (IoT), and accelerating the formation of a development pattern where technologies like NB-IoT, 4G, and 5G undertake various IoT connections.Among them, the number of IoT connections using NB-IoT is expected to grow rapidly, becoming an indispensable part of IMT-2020 or 5G to meet the emerging demand for low-speed, low-bandwidth connections in public utilities, households, and industries.
By the end of 2019, the cumulative number of NB-IoT connections exceeded 95 million, a net increase of nearly 62 million compared to 2018. The upward trend is expected to accelerate before 2022, with NB-IoT connections projected to reach nearly 400 million. The standardized Low Power Wide Area (LPWA) technology has significant advantages in battery life, chip costs, network capacity, and coverage, facilitating the widespread adoption of NB-IoT in remote control and monitoring applications.
NB-IoT technology has already penetrated the smart water management and smart gas meter industries, with connection numbers steadily approaching 20 million, and is beginning to develop deeper into industries such as network management and monitoring. The promotion of NB-IoT technology has transformed the originally complex manual meter reading into wireless automatic meter reading, and it can also utilize online data from remote water meters/gas meters/electric meters for usage analysis, providing real-time feedback on pipeline leakage situations, reducing human resource consumption and improving efficiency.
Currently, most NB-IoT connections in China are concentrated in a few cities, and there is still a lack of widespread adoption nationwide, with many base stations in light load or idle states, indicating significant development space. After the shutdown of 2G and 3G networks, IoT technologies such as POS machines and shared bicycles will also transition to NB-IoT technology. There will also be numerous applications in various niche markets such as smart streetlights, smart parking lots, smart manhole covers, smart home appliances, smart locks, and asset tracking.
According to Counterpoint’s forecast, by 2022, the penetration rate of NB-IoT is expected to exceed 26% of cellular IoT connections. To this end, Xunxintong has proactively laid out its plans, deploying multiple NB-IoT modules based on different platforms, featuring various packaging modes and sizes to meet the design needs of different products across industries. The Xunxintong NB-IoT modules comply with 3GPP Release-14 and are suitable for more use cases, offering faster upload rates (150Kbps) and download rates (100Kbps), deeper coverage (enhanced by 3dB), better mobility, and location support based on the unit.

The smallest size NB-IoT module, measuring only 14.8*12.8*2.0mm, has powerful expansion capabilities and rich interfaces, including UART, GPIO, PCM, SPI, I2C, etc., making it an ideal choice for asset tracking, wearable products, and metering IoT applications.
A multi-band NB-IoT wireless communication module, with rich hardware interfaces, including serial port, GPIO, ADC, etc., providing great convenience for product development. With broader signal coverage, data transmission can also occur in poor communication conditions, such as basements, and is widely used in smart trash bins, smart water meters, etc.
Based on Qualcomm’s new generation of narrowband IoT cellular chip – MDM9205, supporting tri-mode, it can meet the network connection needs of different vertical industries. It also complies with 3GPP Rel.14 standards, supporting voice, TheadX/AliOS systems, Openlinux, FOTA, etc., and can interface with mainstream cloud platform systems. Compared to the previous generation module solutions, the SIM7070G series modules have reduced power consumption in PSM mode by 70%, and are also compatible with 2G modules such as SIM900 and SIM800F.
