The Equipment Industry Development Center of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology released a notice regarding the implementation of GB7258-2017 Amendment No. 2, supplementing the “Technical Conditions for the Safety of Motor Vehicle Operations”. It clearly requires that starting from January 1, 2022, all newly produced passenger cars in China must be equipped with an Event Data Recorder (EDR) or a DVR in-vehicle video recording system that meets the regulations.
In 2020, the sales of passenger cars in China reached 25.31 million, with approximately 20 million new cars sold each year. It is estimated that the overall incremental scale of the EDR market could reach 6 billion yuan per year. According to ReportLiner research, the installation rate of EDR in Chinese passenger cars was 9% in 2021. It is expected that with the policy mandating the installation of EDR, the penetration rate of the EDR industry in China will rise from 7.12% in 2022 to over 70%, and even soar to over 90% by 2024.
As EDR becomes a standard feature in new vehicles, it will drive the demand for MCU, storage, sensors, and other chips. Under the strong push of national industrial policies, EDR will rapidly become popular, benefiting the related industrial chain significantly. The MCU chip plays a crucial role as the control chip in EDR applications, which raises higher technical and quality requirements for the overall stability of MCU products. Chip companies that are technically advanced, can provide safe and reliable products, and have a robust supply chain to support partners in product application innovation will gain more opportunities.
EDR is a device or system composed of one or more in-vehicle electronic modules, which has the function of monitoring, collecting, and recording data from the vehicle and occupant protection systems before, during, and after a collision event, commonly known as the “black box”. From a hardware perspective, compared to in-vehicle video recorders, dedicated EDRs have a smaller overall structure, higher requirements for device stability and data reliability, and require dedicated reading devices to access the data within. Additionally, the types of data recorded by EDR are more extensive, including vehicle speed, braking, steering, throttle, gear position, time, and other real-time operation parameters of the vehicle, for which there are very clear technical requirements in the national standard GB39732-2020 “Automotive Event Data Recorder System”.
The EDR controller mainly involves related chip products and components such as the main controller (MCU), sensors, memory, CAN transceivers, and safety algorithm components. Among them, the MCU main control chip is responsible for parsing and compressing vehicle information collected by sensors, such as vehicle speed, driver seatbelt status, steering signal switch status, and brake pedal position, and then writing it into the memory chip. It receives and sends real-time data through the automotive CAN data bus, while safety components are used for data encryption and decryption. For EDR applications, there are rigid requirements for the MCU chip’s high-speed processing capability, large-capacity eFlash storage, embedded hardware acceleration for cryptography, high-speed ADC sampling, and support for interfaces such as CAN and LIN. Therefore, the main development trend for MCU chips used in EDR is to have high integration, high performance, high reliability, safety, and low power consumption.
National Technology has currently mass-produced over 100 MCU products across 16 series, receiving recognition from benchmark customers in various industries and forming large-scale applications. The N32G455 series, N32G435 series, N32G430 series, etc., all meet the application requirements for EDR products, and have completed EDR product introduction and mass production for several customers. The new N32A455 series automotive-grade MCU, which is currently in sample testing, is expected to achieve broader applications in automotive electronics, including EDR.
Below is an EDR system solution implemented by a customer based on the National Technology N32G435 MCU.
