On April 28, the official Kali Linux blog announced that in the coming days, apt update will be nearly ineffective for everyone.
The Kali Linux team accidentally lost access to the repository signing key, necessitating the creation of a new key. Meanwhile, the repository has been frozen, so no one has been affected yet. However, the team will unfreeze the repository this week, and it has now been signed with the new key.
The Kali Linux team had to roll out a new signing key for the Kali repository. Users need to manually download and install the new key, and here are the installation commands:
sudo wget https://archive.kali.org/archive-keyring.gpg -O /usr/share/keyrings/kali-archive-keyring.gpg
Alternatively, you can use the curl command (Note: Only run one of the following two commands):
sudo curl https://archive.kali.org/archive-keyring.gpg -o /usr/share/keyrings/kali-archive-keyring.gpg
The Kali Linux team stated that the key has not been compromised, and the old key is still valid and has not been deleted. The new keyring will include the old signing key (ED444FF07D8D0BF6) and the new signing key (ED65462EC8D5E4C5).
Netizens commented:
“The world is a huge makeshift stage”
“The private key for the root certificate of the previous platform is stored on a particularly fragile USB drive; I think it would be better to write it down on paper, lest one day the flash drive runs out of power”
