
Power management is the most concerning issue in IoT design, and accurately measuring current is particularly important.
Because low-power devices related to IoT consume power at varying rates, current consumption can range from a few picoamperes to several amperes within a few microseconds to seconds. So, how can we accurately measure microampere and nanoampere signals in a closed current loop?

The Keysight DMM6500 six-and-a-half-digit touchscreen digital sampling multimeter can simultaneously provide the necessary low current ranges, resolution, and speed functions for various applications of smart devices or sensors. The DMM6500 uses a 16-bit analog-to-digital converter, offering a current measurement range of 10μA to 10A, making it capable of measuring both sleep current and active current.

Measuring Sleep Current
The sleep mode leakage current of the microcontroller (MCU) and other components in low-power portable products may only be a few nanoamperes. The total sleep mode state leakage current of the entire product may be a few microamperes. The DMM6500 can measure 1µA sleep current with a resolution of 10pA.

Measuring Operating Current
The above image shows the DMM6500 capturing multi-level active mode current pulses. The DMM6500 can capture load current in all operational states of the device (including low-power portable IoT devices) at a sampling speed of up to 1 million samples per second, from sleep mode to burst pulses of load current during RF transmission.
