Recently, I heard that several colleagues in the company have fallen seriously ill, and some even underwent major surgeries, almost meeting the Grim Reaper. While working hard is important, it is crucial to pay attention to health; if your health deteriorates, both work and life will suffer.

Based on my own experience, I have listed a few habits that may help programmers adjust their work-life balance, thereby improving their physical condition and health.

1. Please go to bed early

If you can’t manage to go to bed early, then there’s no point in discussing anything else. Whether it’s running, exercising, or working hard, if you don’t prioritize going to bed early, nothing will work. Only by going to bed early can you have enough energy during the day; with sufficient energy, you can work effectively. For those of us born in the 80s, staying up late is truly unbearable; you may often wonder: why do I feel so unwell after staying up late a few times?

2. Please eat well

Avoid street stalls and roadside eateries; they use poor quality oil and ingredients. Consuming these unhealthy foods will genuinely harm your body. If your company has a cafeteria, eat there; if not, cook for yourself and bring your meals to work. You can carefully observe that people who eat healthily usually have good complexion and energy.

3. Please eat at regular times

For example, if you eat lunch at 11 AM on the first day, 12:30 PM on the second day, and 1:30 PM on the third day, your stomach won’t be able to handle it. You need to eat at regular intervals. It’s best to eat with colleagues, as this encourages timely eating, and eating together naturally slows down your pace. Eating slowly is a very good way to protect your stomach.

Never skip meals or eat quickly just because you’re busy with work. Irregular eating and fast eating can lead to stomach cancer.

4. Please exercise

After addressing the first three points, you can consider exercising. Exercise not only helps with shaping your body but also enhances physical fitness. You don’t necessarily have to go to a gym; you can work out at home. As long as you have dumbbells and a barbell, you can perform most exercises. However, it’s crucial to pay attention to the correctness of your movements; this is extremely important. Incorrect movements can not only diminish the effectiveness of your workout but also injure your muscles and bones.

If you don’t have friends familiar with fitness, you can watch some workout videos and gradually learn the movements.

I am a fitness enthusiast and work out every day; I feel unwell if I don’t exercise. Without further ado, here are my post-workout results. (^__^) Hehe…

5. Please run or swim

Swimming is three times more effective than running, based on my personal experience. Of course, for women, swimming may not be feasible often due to hair issues, but running is always an option. Aerobic exercises like swimming and running can improve cardiovascular function.

6. Don’t overwork

This is the most critical point. Frequent and excessive overtime will disrupt your entire life rhythm; when the rhythm is off, your body will quickly suffer, leading to various health issues.

7. Learn some skills outside of programming

Programmers shouldn’t just be code monkeys; life should be exciting. You can learn various skills in your spare time, such as fitness, table tennis, badminton, skating, singing, bowling, piano, guitar, cooking, etc. This can help make your life more interesting, and you should invest more in yourself.
