At the end of last year, Qualcomm tailored the Snapdragon 8cx Gen3 computing platform for “Windows on ARM”, which uses a 5nm process and consists of 4 cores of 3.0GHz Cortex-X1 super large cores and 4 cores of 2.4GHz Cortex-A78 large cores. Compared to the previous generation, single-core performance improved by 40%, and multi-core performance surged by 85%. Qualcomm has stated that the Snapdragon 8cx Gen3 can output performance comparable to a 22W Core i5 at a 9W power consumption, or outperform the Core i5 by 25% at the same rated 15W power consumption.

In addition to Qualcomm, MediaTek has also been laying out its plans. The latter launched the brand new “Kompanio” (Dimensity) series mobile platform in May 2021, aimed at providing an excellent user experience for online education, business office, streaming entertainment, productivity creation, gaming, and AI applications, meeting the growing demand for mobile computing.

The Kompanio brand has successively welcomed three products: Dimensity 820, Dimensity 900T, and Dimensity 1300T, which are respectively the “rebranded” versions of Dimensity 820, Dimensity 900, and Dimensity 1100, specifically for Chromebook laptops and tablets. The former’s versatility and influence are not as strong as Qualcomm’s Snapdragon for Windows on ARM systems, while the latter is represented by the Honor Tablet V7 Pro, which is equipped with the Dimensity 1300T.

Recently, MediaTek released a brand new member of the Kompanio family—Dimensity 1380, which uses a 6nm process and an eight-core design, including 4 Cortex-A78 large cores with a frequency of up to 3.0GHz.
In comparison, although the Dimensity 1300T also has 4 Cortex-A78 large cores, its frequency is only 2.6GHz. Even the Dimensity 1200 only has one Cortex-A78 large core with a frequency of 3.0GHz.
In other words, the Dimensity 1380 will have very powerful CPU computing performance. However, the GPU of this chip has significantly shrunk, switching from the Mali-G77 MC9 of the Dimensity 1300T to the Mali-G57 MC5, with 3D performance dropping by at least 30%.

In other aspects, the specifications of the Dimensity 1380 are similar to those of the Dimensity 1×00, such as supporting quad-channel LPDDR4X memory, integrating the APU 3.0 AI engine, supporting AV1 video hardware decoding, ultra-low power voice wakeup, and a separate audio DSP, with added support for Wi-Fi 6E.
Currently, the Dimensity 1380 has been launched in the Acer Chromebook Spin 513, and it is unknown whether there will be any domestic Android tablets incorporating it this year.
