Do you remember the previous review of HP’s Shadow Elf 5 Plus flagship version? It is equipped with an RTX2080 graphics card and the latest Intel 9th generation Core i9-9880H processor, the mobile standard pressure processor platform is the first to feature an 8-core 16-thread CPU, with a significant theoretical performance improvement compared to the 8th generation.
But to be honest, no matter how high the cost performance of the i9+2080 is, the launch price is 19,999 yuan, spending 20,000 yuan on a computer is not something that can be done casually. For ordinary people, it is still too expensive.
And today our protagonist – Shadow Elf 5 Plus low configuration version solves this problem well.
Its price is 7,500 yuan lower than the top configuration version, using the Intel 9th generation Core i7-9750H processor and RTX2070 graphics card. Although it is not as good as i9+2080, its cost performance is still outstanding in the same price range.
So how does this computer perform overall?
Today we will do a simple analysis:
HP Shadow Elf 5 Plus

Left side of the machine
Right side of the machine
Its configuration is as follows:
i7-9750H processor
RTX2070 8GB dedicated graphics card
16GB memory
512GB solid-state drive
1TB mechanical hard drive
17.3-inch 1080P resolution 72% NTSC color gamut 144Hz refresh rate IPS screen
Thickness 33.15mm
Weight 3.3kg
Adapter weight 740g
Current price is 12,499 yuan
Its pros and cons are as follows:
Advantages!
1, CPU unlocked power consumption, i7-9750H performance is good
2, Good screen quality, supports G-SYNC technology
3, The most cost-effective i7+2070 gaming laptop among first-line brands
Disadvantages!
1, The machine is relatively heavy
2, The direction keys are only half-height
3, Limited stock, hard to buy at a discount price
【Upgrade Suggestions】
This laptop is not difficult to disassemble, just unscrew the bottom screws to reveal the back cover.
Dual-channel 16GB memory can meet the needs of most uses, if there are special needs, you can replace it with larger capacity memory.
The solid-state drive is a 512GB Samsung PM981, supporting PCIe 3.0 x4 and NVMe, and can be replaced if needed.
PS: The mechanical hard drive of Shadow Elf 5 Plus is a 1TB HGST7K1000, PMR disk.
【Purchase Suggestions】
1, High demand for cost performance
2, High demand for hard disk storage throughput performance
3, No great demand for portability
The biggest feature of this laptop is its cooling specifications, the 9th generation Core i7-9750H version with six cores maintains the same cooling design as the i9-9880H version, without being reduced due to lower power consumption. This means that the cooling design is more than enough for the i7+2070, and the specific performance will be detailed in the cooling section later.
Shadow Elf 5 Plus’s 144Hz+G-Sync gaming screen is also one of its highlights. HP actively shields the processor’s integrated graphics, transferring all performance output to the dedicated graphics card, thus supporting G-SYNC and enjoying lower latency, which also has a positive effect on game frame rates. However, doing so will further reduce the computer’s battery life.
PS:The screen’s measured color gamut volume is 97.2% sRGB, color gamut coverage is 96.3% sRGB, average △E is 1.08, maximum △E is 1.98, which is quite good.
In terms of noise, its full load decibel level is 50.5dB, which is normal.
So if you want a high cost-performance and strong cooling gaming laptop, then this laptop can be considered.
However, if you hope for strong portability, then this computer may not be suitable for you.
【Final Thoughts from Zhu Wang】
The above image is a disassembly shot of Shadow Elf 5 Plus, featuring a combination of five heat pipes and dual fans. The two fans are large and thick, typical of “brute-force fans”, and the “mini heat pipe” next to the left fan may exist to evenly distribute heat.
Room temperature 25℃
Reflectivity 1.00
BIOS version: F.06
Under full load, the maximum CPU temperature is 95℃, power consumption is 77W, and frequency is maintained at 3.3GHz.
The maximum graphics card temperature is 69℃, power consumption is 115W, frequency 1500MHz.
Due to the low cooling pressure, the CPU can maintain stable high-frequency operation at a power consumption of about 30W higher than TDP.
The surface temperature is shown in the above image, with the highest keyboard keycap temperature at 42.3℃, the WASD key area around 37℃, the direction key at 38℃, and the left wrist rest temperature at 31℃.
Both Shadow Elf 5 Plus and 5 Air have solved the problem of excessive keyboard temperature under high load for Shadow Elf 5. At least under high load, common gaming keys like WASD and the direction keys will not be too hot.
As we mentioned in the review of the top configuration Shadow Elf 5 Plus, the low configuration version with i7-9750H+RTX2070 performs quite well in cooling, mainly due to the identical cooling module and heavy body.
Better cooling means better performance release, Intel’s 9th generation Core i7-9750H can maintain a power consumption of 77W and a frequency of 3.3GHz, which is a typical example.
In my opinion, compared to the top configuration Shadow Elf 5 Plus, the 2070 version feels like“an athlete unburdened by weights”, running more easily.
Do you remember when we reviewed the low configuration version of the Shadow Elf 5 with the GTX1650 graphics card, which reduced the cooling specifications compared to the 1660Ti version?
Now the high and low configurations of Shadow Elf 5 Plus use the same cooling module, looking at the overall price and performance, HP’s most conscience gaming laptop in 2019 is this one.
