According to reports, Google plans to upgrade the Tensor G6 to TSMC’s 2nm process faster than in previous years.

The first Tensor chip, launched in the Pixel 6 in 2021, was manufactured using Samsung’s 5nm process, and the following year’s Tensor G2 chip also used the same process, despite Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 upgrading to a 4nm process that year. Google took a year to catch up, with the Tensor G3 being the first chip to use a 4nm process, and the current Tensor G4 following closely behind, even though Qualcomm and MediaTek’s chips are currently manufactured using a 3nm process. Google is set to transition the Tensor G5 to TSMC later this year, marking its shift to a 3nm process.

However, according to a new report, Google does not want to fall behind next year.

Analyst @dnystedt reports that Google will utilize TSMC’s 2nm process for the Tensor G6 in the Pixel 11 series in 2026. If this information is accurate, it marks a shift in how Google is keeping pace with competitors, as even the next-generation Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset may still use a 3nm process. Remarkably, this could mean that Google can get ahead in this regard, as 2nm Snapdragon chips are not expected to be released until several months after the Tensor G6. However, it is worth noting that there are reports that Qualcomm may use TSMC to manufacture a 3nm version of its upcoming flagship Snapdragon products, while Samsung may produce a 2nm version specifically for Galaxy devices.

Currently, there are not many rumors about the Tensor G6, with only a key report from October 2024 indicating that the chip may have some AI-enhanced features. Numerous leaks from Google’s gChips division suggest that the Pixel 11 series may include several “Video Generation ML” tools for video editing. Additionally, based on rumors about how Google is “promoting” this chip, consumers may find more health-focused features, such as breathing, sleep apnea, gait analysis, and more.

Strangely, early rumors claimed that the Tensor G6 might be based on a 3nm process, similar to the G5 that is set to launch for the Pixel 10. There were previous speculations that the G6 version would be “more advanced,” but now we see that this speculation has been completely replaced by a (potentially more favorable) process upgrade.
