Geotechnical engineering, also known as soil mechanics or geotechnical science, primarily studies the engineering properties of soil materials. It is a new technical system established in the 1960s in civil engineering practices in Europe and the United States.
Geotechnical engineering focuses on solving engineering problems related to rock and soil, including foundation and base issues, slope stability, and underground engineering. Geotechnical engineers analyze data from soil and rock samples collected from construction sites and then calculate the structural requirements needed for the buildings on-site.
