On July 3, 2024, Moore Threads announced a major upgrade to its AI flagship product “KUAER (KUAE) Intelligent Computing Cluster” solution, expanding significantly from a thousand-card level to a ten-thousand-card scale.

Moore Threads founder and CEO Zhang Jianzhong stated at the launch of the ten-thousand-card cluster that it refers to a high-performance computing system composed of ten thousand or more computing acceleration cards (such as GPUs) used for training foundational large models. “The ten-thousand-card cluster is like a team of ten thousand people, and the team needs a very strong communication mechanism to collaborate effectively on a task.” The difficulty of scaling from a thousand-card to a ten-thousand-card cluster increases exponentially—both expanding the intelligent computing center and ensuring efficiency must be balanced.

To meet the core demands of the large model era for computing power that is “large enough in scale + general computing + ecosystem compatibility”, Moore Threads integrates ultra-large-scale GPU ten-thousand-card clusters, extreme computing efficiency optimization, and highly stable operating environments. In large model training, Moore Threads’ ten-thousand-card cluster natively supports multiple precisions, including FP8 computation, and currently supports training and fine-tuning of several mainstream large models, including GPT and DeepSeek.

On November 6, 2024, the 2024 China Haidian High-Value Patent Cultivation Competition, organized by the Haidian District Intellectual Property Bureau of Beijing, awarded Moore Threads’ “KUAER (KUAE) Intelligent Computing Cluster” the first prize.

“We hope that the Moore Threads KUAER Intelligent Computing Cluster can truly achieve ten-thousand cards with one core, and unite the masses with one core, creating a better world,” said Zhang Jianzhong.

In the chip industry, patents are a reflection of technological innovation and an important indicator of a company’s competitiveness. According to data from the National Intellectual Property Administration, as of February 2025, Moore Threads has obtained 470 authorized patents, ranking first among domestic GPU companies in terms of the number of authorized patents. These patents mainly cover key technology areas such as processor architecture design, AI applications, driver software design, and GPU computing clusters, fully demonstrating Moore Threads’ deep accumulation and forward-looking layout in technological innovation. From Following to Catching Up: China's Own GPU Chips | Beijing Private Enterprises Showcase Their StrengthThe Heroic Team Behind the ScenesMoore Threads founder and CEO Zhang Jianzhong, who was once the head of a well-known international chip company in China, is a senior manager with 25 years of experience, having pioneered the company’s market in China and accumulated rich management and market experience. With the arrival of 2020, the entrepreneurial enthusiasm in the domestic chip industry spread rapidly, urgently needing to build self-developed artificial intelligence infrastructure. He gave up a comfortable life in a foreign company and embarked on the entrepreneurial path of Moore Threads. From Following to Catching Up: China's Own GPU Chips | Beijing Private Enterprises Showcase Their StrengthGenerally speaking, overseas GPU chip manufacturers produce globally standardized products and rarely customize them for the Chinese market. For example, many enterprises’ personalized needs, such as smart cities, may not be prioritized by overseas manufacturers, even though these needs exist and represent a significant potential market. The founding team of Moore Threads recognized that there were no domestically produced fully functional GPUs. They believed that a fully functional GPU must be a core component that integrates various computing capabilities for general scenarios. Zhang Jianzhong and his team were determined to create a fully functional GPU for the Chinese people.

Moore Threads’ HR head Shen Jie introduced, “90% of our R&D personnel come from 985, 211, and the top 100 universities globally according to QS rankings. On one hand, we are very proud to have so many excellent colleagues. On the other hand, we say we are actually a ‘hero-less hero team’. This is directly related to the company’s core culture, which advocates teamwork and team spirit. The entire chip R&D process involves thousands of steps, and each step requires very experienced experts. Only by connecting these steps one by one can we truly create an outstanding chip. Therefore, we are a ‘hero-less hero team’.”

Fu Hailiang, a graduate of Tsinghua University, spoke about the challenges of chip R&D, recalling the unforgettable process of transforming this endeavor from “impossible” to “possible”. Moore Threads was established in October 2020, and he joined the company relatively early when it had only about sixty to seventy employees, and the office space was quite cramped, with R&D, product, and functional departments all sitting together, even the air conditioning and doors were installed by themselves. Colleagues typically arrived at the office at 8 AM and left after 11 PM, with a high workload and fast pace. Fu Hailiang recalled, “Throughout the GPU chip R&D process, everyone gave their all. Whether in marketing, R&D, product teams, or leadership, everyone was fully committed.”

Currently, Moore Threads is still a startup company with over 1,000 employees. However, compared to overseas GPU manufacturers with at least 20,000 to 30,000 employees globally, the company will continue to focus on discovering more outstanding talent.

Traditional credit models are difficult to adapt to high-potential hard-tech enterprises like Moore Threads. In 2022, Moore Threads established contact with the Zhongguancun branch of Beijing Bank. Beijing Bank tailored a loan plan worth hundreds of millions for Moore Threads, and the bank’s technology (inclusive) finance specialty team finalized the funding in less than a month, helping to reduce financing costs through the first loan interest subsidy policy in Beijing, providing significant support for the company’s product R&D and innovation.

In 2024, during a critical phase of Moore Threads’ key project, the Beijing branch of Construction Bank, under the organization of the People’s Bank of China Beijing branch and the Zhongguancun branch, took on the responsibility of leading a syndicate model to provide the company with a liquidity loan worth hundreds of millions, completing the entire process in just three working days and efficiently finalizing the financing plan in two months.

It is reported that in March 2023, Moore Threads was recognized as a “Specialized, Refined, Unique, and Innovative” enterprise in Beijing, and the following year received the unicorn enterprise certification in Beijing. In September 2024, it was recognized as a national-level specialized and innovative “Little Giant” enterprise.
