Editor’s Note
As the International Labor Day approaches, “Changchun Chaoyang” has specially launched the column “Cultivating the Spirit of Labor” to focus on labor models from various industries within the jurisdiction, listening to their moving stories of interpreting their original intentions with responsibility and advancing with practical actions.
In these labor models’ stories, there are no earth-shattering declarations, only the steadfastness and dedication of day-to-day efforts. They create value with their hands and define their lives through hard work, sketching the most beautiful silhouettes of laborers on this fertile land of Chaoyang. While we applaud the achievements of urban development, we should pay tribute to every laborer who builds the future with their sweat.
Let us follow the lens and words to get close to these role models around us, feel the power of the spirit of labor, and draw motivation for progress. May every one of you who is striving hard reap growth and brilliance in your endeavors!
“Repairing every chip is a responsibility for the equipment; maintaining every process is a commitment to craftsmanship. Teaching these experiences to students without reservation is my best way of passing on vocational skills,” said Wang Xiaolong, Director of the Electronic Equipment Maintenance Department at Jilin Institute of Technology. Electronic equipment maintenance allows no room for carelessness; every soldering and every debugging is a refinement of craftsmanship.

Wang Xiaolong’s connection with electronic equipment maintenance began in his childhood fascination with “disassembling things”; the family radio, wall clock, and remote control of the television were all objects of his exploration. In high school, to repair a malfunctioning MP4, Wang Xiaolong immersed himself in the library, poring over numerous circuit diagrams and manuals, and finally used a soldering iron to fix the broken ribbon cable. When the MP4 screen lit up again, Wang Xiaolong felt a great sense of accomplishment, which solidified his determination to pursue a career in electronic equipment maintenance.
Today, the Jilin Institute of Technology, where Wang Xiaolong works, is a national key technician college and a national training base for high-skilled talents. He is mainly responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of training workshop equipment while also undertaking some practical teaching tasks. To enhance his professional skills, the library is Wang Xiaolong’s “check-in place” every weekend; he insists on reading a large number of professional books and journal articles and often visits various universities to consult with professional teachers. Each month, Wang Xiaolong disassembles at least two outdated devices for fault analysis and experimental repairs, while also honing his diagnostic and repair skills.

In his teaching work, Wang Xiaolong noticed that students had few practical opportunities and lacked hands-on skills, so he actively innovated teaching methods and proposed a plan to simulate equipment failures using virtual reality technology. “Through this method, students can feel the signals of equipment failures and potential hazards and perform simulated repairs in a virtual environment,” Wang Xiaolong said. This initiative has increased students’ interest in learning and hands-on abilities, significantly improving learning outcomes. “The hardest part of training students is cultivating their ‘sensitivity’ to faults, just like an experienced traditional Chinese medicine practitioner can diagnose issues from subtle signs,” he added.

Wang Xiaolong places great emphasis on cultivating students’ hands-on abilities. He continuously stimulates students’ interest in learning and inquiry during the teaching process, encouraging them to shift from passive to active learning.
Once, due to a sudden power outage, over twenty devices in the college malfunctioned simultaneously, and these devices were urgently needed for practical classes the next day. Faced with this emergency, Wang Xiaolong did not panic but instead saw a teaching opportunity. He quickly gathered students from relevant majors to conduct a real-time repair practice class. After a day and night of hard work, they not only successfully resolved the equipment failures, ensuring the smooth progress of the college’s teaching tasks, but also provided students with valuable hands-on experience.

In recent years, Wang Xiaolong has received numerous honors for his outstanding work, including the “Jilin Province May Day Labor Medal” and the “Changchun City May Day Labor Medal.” These honors not only recognize his efforts but also serve as motivation for him to continue moving forward. Reflecting on his 15-year career, Wang Xiaolong feels that his greatest achievement is mastering excellent repair skills and being able to pass on what he has learned to students, while also developing a good habit of lifelong learning. He regards lifelong learning as a requirement for himself and encourages his students to do the same.
When discussing the path of inheritance for the future, Wang Xiaolong admits that a role model has always guided his direction. “Whenever I think about how to better pass on the spirit of craftsmanship to students, I always think of Master Li Wanjun, a national craftsman.” Wang Xiaolong recalls the scenes of listening to Master Li Wanjun’s lectures and reports multiple times, his eyes filled with respect.
Master Li Wanjun’s dedication to technical research and commitment to passing on craftsmanship deeply moved Wang Xiaolong. As an ordinary technician, Wang Xiaolong hopes to integrate the craftsmanship spirit he learned from Master Li Wanjun into his daily teaching, working diligently with students on the path of skill development, repairing every chip, maintaining every process, and striving for excellence in ordinary tasks.
