Friends in Shanghai should be familiar with trams, whether it’s the refreshing “Caterpillar” tram in Songjiang or the monorail in Zhangjiang, trams have become a part of daily life for many Shanghai residents.
Attention Lingang residents, your own tram is coming soon! This line will adopt the DRT (Digital-rail Rapid Transit) system, making it the first DRT digital tram in the country, serving as a medium-capacity public transport option.
The Lingang Transportation Company has introduced that within the main urban area of Lingang, a local line network is planned to form six lines, with the other five in preliminary research stages. T1 has already released nine design proposals and is inviting the public to vote for their favorite design.
■ T1 Design Proposal: Dynamic Connectivity
The T1 line is 21.75 km long, starting from the Dishui Lake Station on Metro Line 16 and ending at Hongyin Square, passing through the main urban area of Lingang, the high-tech campus area, the Luchao Port community, the heavy equipment industrial park, and the Nicheng community.
According to the Lingang Transportation Company, considering the current limited capacity of conventional public transport in Lingang, a medium-capacity public transport line is being introduced to supplement the commuting needs of residents. The Lingang medium-capacity public transport will extend the functionality of Metro Line 16, expanding its service area. The T1 line is designed based on passenger flow and transportation needs, to strengthen the bus connection between the main urban area and industrial blocks, promoting the integration of industry and city.
■ T1 Design Proposal: Intelligent Connectivity
T1 will adopt the DRT (Digital-rail Rapid Transit) system, and the Lingang Transportation Company stated:
“Lingang T1 will be the first DRT digital tram in the country.”
Other conventional trams either lay tracks on the ground or install sliding wires overhead, using GPS or video recognition for route identification. The DRT digital rail transit system achieves physical recognition through ground magnetic nails, with magnetic nails buried at regular intervals, which can be digitally coded. Parameters such as routes and speeds are pre-set, creating an electronic map composed of all magnetic nails, allowing the tram to travel as if on an electronic map.
The DRT system is a product developed to address new scenarios, demands, and problems in urban public transportation, aiming to eliminate large-scale construction projects during the building process through technological breakthroughs.
The Lingang Transportation Company informed reporters that other conventional vehicles rely on cameras to identify track routes, which can encounter recognition obstacles in windy or rainy conditions when the routes are obscured. In contrast, the DRT digital rail transit system is more convenient and safer.
■ T1 Design Proposal: Global Technology
Doesn’t this high-tech seem cool? The T1’s exterior design is equally impressive. All nine design proposals are filled with a strong sense of technology. A relevant person from the Lingang Transportation Company told reporters that the design style of T1 aligns with the future city and technological city ethos and positioning of Lingang, and the future six local transport lines will resonate in their exterior designs, forming a “family” concept.
■ T1 Design Proposal: Future City
It is reported that the cool design of T1 comes from an Italian design company that previously specialized in custom vehicle designs for Porsche and Ferrari.
Finally, the most concerning question: when will the cool, high-tech T1 that meets the commuting needs of Lingang residents arrive? The Lingang Transportation Company stated that T1 is planned to start construction within this year, and it is believed that it will meet everyone soon!
