The TIOBE website recently released the programming index information for January. The top three programming languages this month are Java, C, and Python, with C++ and C# ranking fourth and fifth.
TIOBE Programming Language of the Year
The TIOBE Programming Language of the Year award is given to the programming language that has the highest growth rate in usage over the year.
Last month, TIOBE predicted that Python, Java, C, and C# were all contenders. In a poll initiated by ‘programmers’ insights’, C language received the lowest votes.
However, unexpectedly, the ancient C language has once again become the TIOBE Programming Language of the Year. 
In 2019, C’s usage increased by 2.44%, C# rose by 2.07%, and Python increased by 1.41%. (Relevant information can be found in the data chart below.)
C is a general-purpose programming language widely used for the development of system software and application software. It was designed and developed by Dennis Ritchie and Ken Thompson at Bell Labs between 1969 and 1973, based on the B language, to facilitate the portability and development of the UNIX operating system.
This is the third time C has won the Programming Language of the Year award, with previous wins in 2008 and 2017.
Why did C language see the largest growth?
TIOBE attributes this to the Internet of Things (IoT) and numerous small smart devices. Performance is crucial for small devices, and C language excels in this area. Additionally, every processor has a C compiler, and C is easy to learn.
