Because of the great “Uncharted”, I have always admired Drake, so I took this pen name when I entered the industry and have used it ever since.
I believe many friends are currently using traditional desktop computers for gaming or office work. It is naturally Drake’s first choice. When we see traditional desktops with super strong performance, cool appearance, and excellent expandability, it is only natural to place them at the top of the usage hierarchy.
However, Drake feels that having a large desktop in his small room takes up quite a bit of space. Is there any way to solve this problem? If a powerful and cool-looking mini computer appeared at this time, would this annoyance be eliminated? Let’s continue to explore.
Is small not enough for you?
Drake has said so much just to introduce our main character this time, the Asus M80 mini desktop. When I first got this product, I was shocked because it is very light, even lighter than many laptops, and its size is only comparable to that of a gaming console. This way, even if placed next to a monitor, it won’t take up too much space on the desk, and it will make the entire desk look very clean.
This Asus M80 mini desktop can be placed in either vertical or horizontal mode, as both sides have foot pads. From the side, it has hollowed diagonal ventilation holes, which, when viewed from a distance, resemble artistic water splash effects. The curved side panel enhances the three-dimensional effect of the diagonal lines. It can be seen that Asus’s products have a strong sense of design in terms of appearance recently.
As Drake mentioned earlier, the Asus M80 is very compact. The official data shows that its weight is only 1.96Kg. One should know that an ordinary business laptop weighs more than this, and its dimensions are 260×180×77mm, which can definitely fit into a bag designed for business laptops.
Details Show Sincerity
When the entire machine is placed upright, we find that the front panel is very simple and clean, but there are no front ports. A thin red line runs from top to bottom, and the power button is located at the upper part, which lights up red when turned on, making it very easy to identify. Below is a prominent Asus “Logo”. Moreover, the overall red and black color scheme is very impactful.
Next, let’s take a look at its interface performance. Regardless of whether it is large or small, the expandability of a desktop is something everyone is very concerned about. On this Asus M80, from top to bottom, there are 4 USB 3.1 ports, 2 USB 2.0 ports, 1 RJ45 Ethernet port, 3.5MM audio port, 1 DisplayPort, 2 HDMI ports, and a power interface with a security lock hole. This level of expandability is sufficient to meet everyone’s daily usage needs.
One point that Drake still wants to raise is that although the weight and size of the Asus M80 chassis can be described as lightweight and compact, its power supply is quite heavy, comparable to the entire machine. This could be a small disaster for friends who are used to Apple products.
Small Body Contains Great Energy
In people’s imagination, having such a small chassis would naturally mean that the configuration would lag behind, but this Asus M80 would not agree with such a statement. It is equipped with an Intel I5 7300HQ processor, 8GB of RAM, and a 512GB SSD + 1TB HDD. In addition, the M80 also uses an NVIDIA GTX 1060 graphics card, which is quite rare for such a compact mini desktop to have such a high-performance graphics card. After the configuration introduction, the next step is the benchmark tests that friends love the most. Drake has prepared 3DMark and Cinebench R15 for everyone.
First, we have the very familiar 3DMark, which includes all the necessary benchmark tests for your hardware. With its wide range of benchmark tests, you can test everything from tablets and laptops to the latest 4K gaming PCs. In the end, a score will be given, which can intuitively show the results. We can see that the Asus M80 still achieved good results under relatively harsh conditions.
Next is the Cinebench R15 test, which is mainly aimed at the overall performance of the processor. It uses the Cinema 4D special effects software engine developed for the film and television industry to test CPU performance. Finally, it can produce scores for single-core and multi-core processors, making it easy for everyone to compare.
Can Play a Good Game
Although we see that the Asus M80 is a mini desktop, do not underestimate its gaming performance, as it is equipped with an NVIDIA GTX 1060 3GB GDDR5 graphics card, so its strength should not be underestimated. Below, Drake has prepared two popular games, “NieR: Automata” and “Resident Evil 7”, to test its gaming performance.
First, the “2B Miss” comes on stage. “NieR: Automata” is a new work published by Square Enix. The game is set in the distant future and tells the story of the mechanical life forms sent by aliens, the enemies of humanity, fighting against the human-made “YoRHa” troops on the destroyed earth. When playing games on the Asus M80, the overall feeling is very smooth, and there will be no lag or crashes during gameplay, allowing one to immerse themselves well in the game.
Next is Drake’s favorite “Resident Evil 7”. After several generations of dormancy, Resident Evil has finally regained the fear it once gave. Both the graphics and atmosphere make people feel tense. In terms of gameplay, it feels like returning to the first generation. Its overall graphics have a somewhat grayish feeling, which allows one to immerse themselves in the game well. We can still see CAPCOM’s effort in the creation of this generation of Resident Evil.
Is It Your Best Choice?
After a few days of use, Drake has a new understanding of this Asus M80 mini computer. Previously, I always thought that mini desktops could only be used for HTPC or light office work, but this M80 really made Drake see it in a new light. It is completely a main machine that can be used for business office as well as for challenging large single-player games. It can be said that from configuration to design, it is almost flawless.
However, the Asus M80 still lacks some user-friendly design details, such as the absence of any ports on the front panel. This is not particularly friendly for friends who often need to use USB drives or connect to external hard drives for daily office work. Moreover, although the hollow design on the side is beautiful, Drake is concerned that dust or paper scraps may enter. Of course, this point will need to be observed over the long term before a conclusion can be drawn.
But imperfections do not overshadow the merits. Overall, the Asus M80 is still a mini desktop that Drake is quite satisfied with. If you can accept its price of 7499 yuan, then it will be a good choice.
