The Debian Electronics team announced today that the popular Arduino IDE for programming AVR microcontrollers is now back in the software repository of the Debian GNU/Linux operating system.

After being absent from the Debian GNU/Linux repository for over 7 years, thanks to the hard work of Carsten Schoenert and Rock Storm, the latest version of the open-source cross-platform Arduino IDE is now available for installation.

While you can get the latest Arduino IDE binaries for 64-bit, 32-bit, and ARM (32/64-bit) architectures from the official website, installing the Arduino IDE on Debian GNU/Linux now only requires one command. Just run sudo apt install arduino in the terminal emulator to install the latest version on your Debian PC and get ready to upload to your Arduino board.

The package is currently maintained in the Debian Sid (unstable) repository and deploys the Arduino integrated development environment and related libraries to your computer, allowing you to program, compile, and upload to your Arduino device.
According to the maintainers, this is also a call for the community to test and see if they can find some volunteers with the right tools and knowledge who are willing to try the Arduino package and let them know of any issues.
“The purpose of this article is not just to announce this new upload, but rather more of a testing request,” Rock Storm stated in a blog post: “The name is likely what everyone wants: Beta Testers for Arduino (dead or alive).”
I know some of my readers are interested in microcontroller programming, especially Arduino, so if you are reading this article and have a Debian-driven machine nearby, then install the Arduino IDE from the Debian unstable repository and report any bugs here.
