Author Introduction
You Zheng, male, Han ethnicity, born in December 1963, from Yangzhou, Jiangsu, a member of the Communist Party, Doctor of Engineering, Professor, PhD Supervisor, and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. He is currently the Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and President of Huazhong University of Science and Technology.
His main academic focus is on intelligent microsystems and their applications in space. He was the first in China to carry out technological innovation and engineering practice for micro-nano spacecraft, serving as the chief designer for the design, construction, launch, and on-orbit operation of several micro-nano satellites, including “TH-1”, “NS-1”, and “NS-2”. Among these, the NS-1 satellite was the smallest “wheel-controlled three-axis stabilized satellite” in orbit at that time, making significant contributions to the technological advancement of micro-systems and micro-satellites in China. He has broken through several core technologies and developed a series of internationally advanced devices and micro-systems, including micro MEMS energy storage devices, energy micro-systems, MEMS solar sensors, micro/nano star sensors, MEMS switches/relays, MEMS scanning mirrors, and detection micro-systems, many of which have been applied in aviation, aerospace, and other fields. He has won three second-class National Technology Invention Awards, two second-class National Science and Technology Progress Awards, and over ten provincial and ministerial-level scientific and technological awards that do not overlap with national-level awards. He has been granted over 90 national invention patents, published more than 400 SCI/EI papers, and authored four monographs and two translated works.
Article Introduction
In the 2024 Issue 4 of the Journal of Instrumentation (English), the editor-in-chief, Chairman of the Chinese Society of Instrumentation, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and President of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Academician You Zheng, wrote a special commentary article titled Why It’s Important to Focus on Developing High-End Sensor Technology, systematically elaborating on the strategic significance and technical keys of high-end sensors.
The article points out that sensors are the “source technology” of the information society and the “bridge” between the physical and digital worlds. Their core function is to convert various physical, chemical, or biological quantities into recognizable digital signals, widely serving important fields such as scientific research, industry, national defense, and healthcare. Academician You Zheng emphasizes that high-end sensors, due to their involvement with new principles, new materials, and new devices, as well as their high integration, wide application, and technology density, have become a “bottleneck” restricting the development of industries in China.
The article deeply analyzes how sensors play important roles in scientific instruments, smart terminals, high-speed rail, healthcare, and national defense. For example, high-speed trains are equipped with one sensor for every 40 components on average; modern medical diagnostic methods rely on hundreds of physiological, chemical, and biological sensors; and the perception and combat capabilities of unmanned systems completely depend on high-end sensor networks.
Academician You Zheng calls for promoting the construction of a strong sensor nation in China, which requires collaborative innovation among government, industry, academia, research, finance, and application, accelerating the formation of a full-chain ecosystem from basic research to application transformation. He particularly emphasizes the importance of closely integrating “talent cultivation” with “industrial development”, believing that this is the fundamental way to break through technological bottlenecks and achieve autonomous control.
