For over 30 years, we have been continuously developing and testing VxWorks. Its latest version focuses on helping our customers cope with the operational and management challenges of devices in transformation. This is the first small operating system designed to create smart IoT devices, achieving connectivity, optimized upgrades, and determinism, while meeting safety certification requirements across multiple industries. VxWorks is widely used in various sectors around the globe. In aerospace and defense, it has been implemented by over 185 customers in more than 70 aircraft, including operational fighter jets and space probes such as the Curiosity Mars rover. VxWorks is also used in top autonomous vehicles, critical medical devices like MRI scanners, and thousands of industrial robots of all sizes. It is the only real-time operating system that operates in outer space, meeting the most stringent safety requirements to ensure zero failures. Wind River VxWorks is a secure and reliable real-time operating system for the IoT.

The latest release of VxWorks 7 includes the following new features and enhancements:
-
Modularity: A new modular architecture allows users to implement efficient and targeted upgrades to system components and protocols without changing the system kernel, thereby minimizing the testing and recertification workload, ensuring that customer systems can always adopt the latest technologies.
-
Security: A full suite of built-in security features, including secure data storage, anti-tamper design, secure upgrades, trusted boot, user and policy management.
-
Reliability: Enhanced functionality to meet the increasing demands for safety applications in healthcare, industrial, transportation, aerospace, and defense sectors.
-
Upgradability: The VxWorks platform integrates a microkernel with a standard kernel, allowing users to apply the same RTOS foundation across different categories of devices, from small consumer wearables to large networking devices and everything in between, thereby reducing development and maintenance costs.
-
Connectivity and Graphics: Supports various industry-leading standards and protocols such as USB, CAN, Bluetooth, FireWire, and Continua, along with out-of-the-box high-performance networking capabilities. This graphically rich platform includes an efficient, publicly released OpenVG stack, hardware-accelerated graphics drivers, and Tilcon graphic design tools.
According to Chris Rommel, Executive Vice President of IoT & Embedded Technology at VDC Research, “OEC vendors are all gearing up to address the business opportunities and technical demands brought by IoT. Many connected systems require operating systems to provide greater flexibility and scalability while maintaining the determinism required for mission-critical applications. The new features offered by VxWorks can meet the evolving industry demands, keeping Wind River at the forefront of the RTOS market.”
