Youth in Fengxian Develop Unique Summer Courses for Kids

The children’s summer vacation has also arrived as scheduled

This summer, the kids in Fengxian District

are having a bit of a different experience!

The Fengxian Love Summer Camp has launched

a plethora of “treasure courses” that shine brightly

directly elevating summer life to “super exciting mode”!

These courses are carefully crafted around thephysical and mental characteristics andgrowth needs

of elementary school students

with three major themed course packages

Chinese Traditional Culture,Technology Innovation,and Mental Health

Moreover, there are two “support teams”

that use their “various skills”

to transform the summer camp classroom into

an ocean of joy for the children

at how much fun the kids are having this summer!

“Youth Co-Creation Team”:

Empowering creativity, illuminating the light of technology

The “Youth Change Life Lab” co-creation partner team is the “think tank” behind this course development. This team originated from the “Science and Innovation Camp” activity earlier this year. Over the past six months, the Fengxian District Youth League Committee has provided them with funding, platforms, resources, and venue support, attracting “treasure youth” from various industries to join. They leverage their professional expertise and creative ideas to refine the courses together.

Wang Tiezhen, deputy manager of the Comprehensive Supervision Department of Fengxian Jianyu Company, brings light-sensitive experiments and electromagnetic field principles into the classroom, revealing the mysteries of physics through fun demonstrations. Despite his busy work schedule, he maintains a passion for physics knowledge, providing children with a unique physics course. Chen Bangyan, a chemistry teacher at Fengxian High School, designed the “Science on the Tip of the Tongue” course, teaching children to extract anthocyanins and create paintings, and observe the Maillard reaction in food cooking, making chemistry knowledge tangible. Li Nan, a senior student at Shanghai Business School, leads children to build AI smart cars from scratch, from Lego assembly to Raspberry Pi installation, and debugging radar tracking and obstacle avoidance functions, unlocking the fun of technology step by step. There are also interactive classes with the EDU version of robotic dogs, allowing children to understand artificial intelligence algorithms through hands-on practice. These courses, developed independently by the youth, were first piloted in the “Science and Innovation Camp” and have now expanded to cover 45 summer camp locations across the district, becoming the most anticipated “technology feast” for the children.

“University Student Assistants”:

Mutual Growth, Promoting Development Together

In the summer camp, a group of youthful figures injects unique vitality into the classroom. Sixty university student assistants from various universities signed up through the “Youth Fengxian” WeChat public account to become special “guides” for the children during their summer vacation. During the summer camp, they personally refine lesson plans and independently stand in front of the classroom, sparking unique interactions with the children.

Tao Yunhao, a junior social work student at Shanghai Ocean University, is applying for the assistant position in the Love Summer Camp for the second time. He combines the “Poetry Corner” with the “Tang Dynasty Life Aesthetics Exhibition” at the Fengxian Museum to design the course “Poetry in Chang’an”, guiding children to touch the atmosphere of the prosperous Tang Dynasty through the verses of Li Bai and Du Fu, and understand the cultural life of the Tang Dynasty. In the classroom of Shiyan Primary School, Liu Yiwen, a junior student at Shanghai Normal University, initiated the “City Little Heroes, Big Ideas Battle” 2.0 activity, where children become “little planners”, brainstorming ideas for the construction of Fengxian New City, sketching the blueprint of their hometown with their innocent words and drawings. During the summer camp, some assistants used the “Mortise and Tenon Structure” as a starting point to guide children in assembling traditional woodcraft, experiencing the “Chinese wisdom” in ancient architecture; others combined with the “Reading Club” to carry out a “Book Drift” activity, allowing children to exchange and share their beloved books, making new friends through stories. The rich courses have brought joy and growth to the elementary school students, while the university student assistants have also gained practical experience in lesson writing, course design, and class management, achieving mutual growth through teaching.

Collaborative Efforts:

Expanding Resources, Extending Classroom Boundaries

The richness of the courses also stems from the “joint efforts” of multiple resources. The Fengxian District Youth League Committee actively collaborates with government departments, co-construction units, universities, and caring enterprises to provide over 70 love public welfare courses for the summer camp.

In the “Red Education” section, off-campus counselors and veteran comrades from the Work Committee come to the classroom to tell revolutionary stories, allowing the red gene to be integrated into the bloodline and passed down through generations; in the “Cultural Literacy” enhancement, traditional skills experiences such as non-heritage tie-dyeing, lacquer fan making, and hand weaving are showcased, allowing children to feel the charm of excellent Chinese traditional culture through hands-on practice and cultivate aesthetic interests; in the “Growth Science Popularization” classroom, fire emergency drills, anti-fraud knowledge dissemination, food hygiene safety lectures, and youth first aid skills training are continuously conducted, deeply instilling safety awareness in the children; in the “Interest Cultivation” segment, the fun of Go games, the ink charm of traditional Chinese painting, the artistic essence of calligraphy practice, and the cultural charm of shadow puppetry performances allow children to gain unique and unforgettable summer memories through diverse experiences.

From youth creativity to student practice, from classroom learning to local resources, the Fengxian Love Summer Camp uses “dedication” and “innovation” to give each child’s summer a unique color. The Fengxian District Youth League Committee will continue to uphold the philosophy of serving young people, continuously optimize the summer camp curriculum, integrate various resources, and provide children with a higher quality and more diverse learning and growth platform, helping them grow in happiness and blossom in their development.
