Recently, due to the pneumonia epidemic, everyone has to stay at home, which was originally thought to be a very desirable life:
But as the epidemic continues to spread, the holiday has been extended……
In order not to cause trouble to society, we have to continue to stay at home, suddenly feeling lonely and restless. Lying down every day, I am tired of playing with my phone.
This is not good, so we thought about how to create some activities.
Just when Hardcore Academy was planning a “Hardcore Anti-Epidemic Marathon” event, which needed to use Raspberry Pi, we teamed up with a senior member of Mushroom Cloud Maker Space—Raspberry Pi expert Drift Fungus, to talk about the basics of Raspberry Pi, helping everyone better “eat the pie”.
What exactly is Raspberry Pi?
No, we are not the same
Simply put, Raspberry Pi is a small computer about the size of a credit card.
And it is the world’s third best-selling computer! (The first two need not be mentioned.)
Due to the increasing number of people applying to study computer science, Eben Upton, the teaching director of Cambridge University, decided to reignite the curiosity of the next generation about computing with a small gadget that sparked his childhood interest in programming. To accomplish this, it had to be able to be embedded in various common things and be affordable enough. BBC’s report generated a lot of public attention, and they began a Don Quixote-style effort. Despite facing various complex challenges, Upton and his Raspberry Pi Foundation team ultimately overcame the difficulties, making this credit card-sized single-board computer the third best-selling computer in the world.
Let’s take a look at what the inventor of Raspberry Pi looks like.
That’s right, we are brothers
Why is it called “Raspberry Pi”?
Raspberry Pi = “Raspberry” + “Pi”
First, let’s explain why it’s called “Raspberry”.
Foreigners seem to have a habit of naming their projects after fruits or small animals.
For example, Apple, Apricot Computers, Acorn, etc.
There are also similar names like Tomcat, Oracle, Hadoop (named after a toy elephant by the project leader’s child), etc.
As for the word “Raspberry”, on one hand, Upton wanted to follow the fruit tradition of Apple, Apricot Computers, and Acorn (the predecessor of chip manufacturer Arm and BBC Micro manufacturer) while also jokingly pointing to the playful nature of the project at the time.
Upton said: “Many companies are named after fruits, and ‘blowing a raspberry’ is also intentional. (Meaning to fart, raspberry tart sounds like fart)”
Why is it called “Pi”?
The reason is that Upton’s prototype ran Python code for the first time, taking the sound of “Pi” from “Python”.
Upton said: “Just like the BBC Micro booting into BASIC, this one boots into a certain version of Python.” He said the machine was named Pi because of that.
Actually, besides Raspberry Pi, there are also Orange Pi, Lychee Pi, Banana Pi, they are all pies, and the flavors are not much different.
What can Raspberry Pi do?
First of all, of course, the original intention of Raspberry Pi—learning programming, for example, you can learn the popular Python recently.
On a simpler note, it can also be used as a downloader (24-hour download), NAS (home private cloud), set up a personal server to write blogs, gaming console, home media center, etc.By installing the official operating system and combining a screen, it can also serve as an advertising board similar to an airport or cafe.
On a more complex level, you can check out the video below:

Now, let’s take a look at the content of this live course.
1. Introduction to various models of Raspberry Pi
First, you might encounter a question, which Raspberry Pi is better to buy?
Drift Fungus will first help you understand the characteristics of each version of the Pi to help you make a choice.
Officially sold, no network card, slightly weaker performance“Collector’s Edition”Using the 3B chip, can do some small applicationsNo PoE interface in the upper right corner3B+ can start running a 64-bit systemSingle-core, relatively slow to boot, but compactCompared to Zero, it has a wireless network card
Zero is suitable for small projects and can also be used as a handheld gaming console, for example:
2. Is it true that Raspberry Pi accessories are more expensive than Pi?
A Raspberry Pi can be had for three to four hundred bucks, but just like when a girl buys a nice sweater, she will also buy a lot of other things to match it. You might also need:
Suitable for making a home media centerSame as aboveSuitable for gaming enthusiastsLakka, same as above, likely supports XboxScreenly, suitable for making the advertising machine mentioned aboveOf course, there are many other systems that can be installed, and I won’t introduce them all here, you can check the video playback, which Drift Fungus has covered.Later, there will also be software selection for burning, how to connect devices, and how to initialize configurations and other content.
6. GPIO pin definitions
We will also explain GPIO pin definitions.
Raspberry Pi is playing an increasingly important role among makers, its powerful versatility and rich functionality are gaining more and more favor from DIY enthusiasts. This time, Drift Fungus will introduce the latest Raspberry Pi 4B, from zero basics to entry-level, to hands-on interesting applications.
Welcome to “eat” Raspberry Pi, we are waiting for you!
