Introduction

Gateways and routers are both used in networks, and these two hardware facilities mainly serve to connect hosts from different subnets. They can both forward data packets that reach the host. There are many similarities between these two devices, but there are also many essential differences.

The IoT gateway and router are very similar; they work as a bridge connecting different types of devices and networks. Local devices and technologies have different interfaces, which are converted by the gateway to adapt to protocols and external network connections. For example, your home router bridges the connection between devices and the internet. It connects your local area network to the internet protocol suite (TCP/IP) with the wide area network (ISP) connection. The IoT gateway also supports a similar process, connecting IoT devices to the internet.

However, the main difference from routers is the workflow of the IoT gateway. When processing data, an IoT gateway can make real-time decisions and manage without needing to connect to the cloud to control your applications. Simply put, an IoT gateway can perform complex tasks in both offline and online scenarios, while a router can only connect devices to the internet when online.

(1) Data Management: IoT gateways manage all data from IoT devices, sensors, and actuators. They aggregate, process, and filter data from all these devices, then only send the most important information to the cloud. When controlling and monitoring IoT applications from remote locations, they also bridge data from the cloud.
(2) Lower Bandwidth Consumption: With hundreds of thousands of IoT devices participating in the IoT ecosystem, imagine the amount of bandwidth consumption from continuously transmitting data from many devices connected to the internet. IoT gateways can maintain low bandwidth consumption and manage data from all devices throughout the system by preprocessing it before sending it to the external network.
(3) Reduced Latency: With IoT gateways creating higher efficiency, IoT device networks will connect to the cloud faster and reduce latency issues. Additionally, by processing data at the edge, IoT gateways eliminate latency bottlenecks that occur when IoT devices attempt to connect to the cloud. IoT gateways are closer to the data source, thus improving latency issues.
(4) Energy Saving: By managing data processing through IoT gateways, reducing bandwidth consumption, and decreasing latency for IoT devices, it enables hundreds of thousands of IoT devices to operate efficiently, ultimately requiring less energy. It is much more energy-efficient to use one IoT gateway to send and receive data from the cloud than to have multiple IoT devices continuously trying to connect to the cloud.
(5) Network Security: IoT gateways enhance the security of the IoT ecosystem by reducing the connection points that hackers can target. IoT gateways are also equipped with multiple security options, such as TPM 2.0, to ensure complete data encryption.
(6) Lower Total Cost: With lower power consumption and network expenses, IoT gateways not only increase the efficiency of IoT applications but also reduce operational costs. Furthermore, they lower the risk of downtime with more secure and reliable applications, resulting in more cost-effective IoT applications.
(7) Durable and Reliable: Industrial IoT gateways are designed to withstand the extreme environments that edge computing applications often face. Built with robust industrial materials, industrial IoT gateways are more durable and reliable when deployed in harsh physical environments.
(8) Edge Computing: With more powerful processors available on the market, IoT gateways are configured with high-end specifications (CPU, RAM, SSD storage, GPU, etc.) to perform complex computing algorithms such as machine learning, deep learning, and artificial intelligence at the edge. Additionally, with industrial IoT gateways, users can deploy them in the most remote and extreme industrial application environments, such as smart agriculture, fleet telematics, in-vehicle applications, and remote monitoring of gas and oil.
