BCV2211: Type-C Guardian with 45V Hot-Swap and Integrated OVP/OCP/OTP Protection Switch Rated for 50V

Introduction

The BCV2211 is a highly integrated IC featuring a voltage withstand of up to 50V, with over-voltage protection (OVP), over-current protection (OCP), and over-temperature protection (OTP). It is widely used in charging circuits or low-voltage systems’ front ends, capable of withstanding abnormal input voltages of up to 50V. It has excellent hot-swap capability, allowing for hot-swapping at up to 45V when 0.1uF capacitors are connected to the VIN and VOUT terminals, making it particularly suitable for resisting the impact of spikes from Type-C or other abnormal input voltages, thus protecting lithium batteries or low-voltage systems from damage caused by abnormal input failures.

Overview and Features

Protection Mechanism Function: When the input voltage exceeds the over-voltage protection (OVP) threshold of 6.1V, the IC will quickly turn off the internal MOSFET to prevent the downstream low-voltage system from being affected by the abnormally high input voltage. When the input current of the low-voltage system is too high (OCP), the IC will quickly turn off the internal MOSFET to avoid the impact of abnormally high current input on the downstream low-voltage system. Additionally, the BCV2211 also features chip over-temperature protection (OTP); when the junction temperature exceeds 155ºC (typical value), the internal FET will turn off, and when the junction temperature cools to 120ºC (typical value), the device will exit thermal shutdown. 45V Touch Test: No capacitors are required for input and output; the 45V touch test has passed, allowing customers to use it with confidence.

Function Description

The BCV2211 is an over-voltage/over-current protection switch chip that controls the internal power MOSFET switch by monitoring the input voltage, output current, and battery voltage; thus protecting downstream devices. When the input voltage exceeds the preset threshold, the chip immediately turns off the power MOSFET to prevent instantaneous high voltage from damaging downstream devices. When the output current exceeds the preset threshold, to eliminate the impact of spike currents, the chip will first wait for a fixed period. After this period, if the output current remains above the preset threshold, the internal power MOSFET will be turned off to prevent high current from damaging downstream devices. Additionally, the chip also features over-temperature protection, under-voltage protection, and other functions.

1. Over-Voltage Protection (OVP)

The BCV2211 continuously monitors the power supply voltage during operation. When it detects that the power supply voltage exceeds 6.1V, the system will immediately turn off the internal power MOSFET. The system continues to monitor the input voltage; when it detects that the power supply voltage drops below 5.92V, the system determines that the input voltage has temporarily exited the over-voltage state. At this point, the system will wait for 6ms; if the power supply voltage remains below 5.92V during this 6ms, the system considers that the power supply voltage has fully returned to normal; the output signal will then turn on the power MOSFET.

2. Over-Current Protection (OCP)

The BCV2211 continuously monitors the output current during operation, with an over-current threshold of 2.0A. When it detects that the output current exceeds the over-current threshold, the system will first wait for 460us; if the output current remains above the over-current threshold during this 460us, the system will output a signal to turn off the power MOSFET. The system continues to monitor the output current; when it detects that the output current drops below the over-current recovery threshold, the system determines that the output current has temporarily exited the over-current state. At this point, the system will wait for 430ms; if the output current remains below the over-current threshold during this 430ms, the system considers that the output current has fully returned to normal, and the output signal will turn on the power MOSFET.

3. Over-Temperature Protection (OTP)

The BCV2211 can monitor its internal temperature to prevent thermal failures. When the internal temperature reaches 155℃, the chip will turn off the power switch, and it will resume operation when the internal temperature cools below 120℃.
