Professor Yin Jieming’s Team Achieves Significant Results at the International Top Conference DAC 2025

Recently, the research paper titled “FineRR-ZNS: Enabling Fine-Granularity Read Refreshing for ZNS SSDs”, authored by Li Jun as the first author from Professor Yin Jieming’s team at Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications’ School of Computer, School of Software, and School of Cyberspace Security, was accepted at the 62nd Design Automation Conference (DAC 2025). DAC is an A-class international academic conference recommended by the China Computer Federation, co-sponsored by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and is the top conference in the field of Electronic Design Automation (EDA). The 62nd DAC will be held on June 22, 2025, in San Francisco, USA.

This research focuses on the excessive data migration overhead caused by the region-level read refreshing mechanism in Zoned Namespace Solid State Drives (ZNS SSDs), proposing a fine-grained read refreshing mechanism called FineRR-ZNS. This solution achieves precise block refresh location through a host-controlled block-level selective refresh strategy, combined with metadata remapping technology and region reconstruction methods, ensuring data integrity while prioritizing access to remapped data. Experimental results show that this mechanism can average an I/O throughput improvement of 28.2% while increasing storage space utilization by 41.8%.

With the development of AI and big data technologies, the market demands higher performance, lower power consumption, and cost efficiency from SSDs. The innovation of the FineRR-ZNS technology provides new solutions to meet these demands and helps drive the SSD industry towards high performance, low power consumption, and high reliability. This achievement not only offers innovative ideas for performance optimization of ZNS SSDs but also showcases the latest research progress of our institute in the field of computer system architecture.
