Some people have discovered hidden pinhole cameras in hotel rooms.
There have even been cases of women being secretly filmed while walking down the street.
Issues related to pinhole cameras have frequently trended online, raising widespread concern among the public, with many expressing worries about their privacy being violated.
So, how can we effectively detect these “ubiquitous” pinhole cameras? What are some convenient and practical anti-spying tips? You can learn them in just a few minutes!

What is a pinhole camera used for? A pinhole camera, also known as a micro camera, has a shooting aperture the size of a pinhole, hence the name. Its size is roughly that of a one-yuan coin.
Pinhole cameras were originally used for undercover journalism, police investigations, and other scenarios to uphold justice and protect public safety, but a minority of criminals have misused this technology.

What are the classifications of pinhole cameras? Pinhole cameras can be classified by function into those that transmit captured content in real-time to a terminal and those that store content locally, with the latter having a built-in storage module.
By data transmission method, pinhole cameras can be divided into wireless and wired types. Wireless cameras transmit data over distances of several dozen to even hundreds of meters, as long as a receiver is installed within that range to collect video signals; wired cameras must be connected via a data cable to function, with the other end typically connected to a recording device.

How does a pinhole camera work? The working principle of a pinhole camera is: light collected through the lens is projected onto a photosensitive element, which converts the light signal into an electrical signal; the electrical signal is then converted into a digital signal; after compression, the digital signal is transmitted to a monitor or recording device, thus displaying or recording an image that we can see.
However, due to size limitations, pinhole cameras generally cannot adjust focus or aperture size. If they have audio functionality, additional components for sound collection, processing, and transmission must be included.

Where are pinhole cameras often hidden in hotels? Common hiding spots for pinhole cameras in hotels include: TVs, routers, small holes in set-top boxes, smoke detectors, air conditioning vents, corners of ceilings, chandeliers, and other concealed areas, shadows behind paintings, and wall sockets and switches.
Particularly pay attention to: devices facing the bed such as alarm clocks, speakers, water dispensers, air purifiers, as well as toiletries in bathrooms and restrooms.
Spies may hide waterproof cameras inside large shampoo or body wash bottles. If a guest simply squeezes the nozzle of the body wash, they may not discover the camera. However, shaking the bottle can reveal the presence of a camera inside.

What is the first thing to do after checking into a hotel?Scan with your phone: Upon entering the room, first turn off the lights and close the curtains to maintain an absolutely dark environment. Open your phone’s camera and slowly scan each corner of the room; if bright spots appear on the dark phone screen, they are likely micro cameras.
Note that some Apple phones may not work with this method, as their cameras come with a built-in red light filter.
Flashlight inspection: Use a flashlight to check all exposed holes in the room, such as ventilation openings and power outlets. If there are hidden pinhole cameras, the flashlight can reveal reflective surfaces.
Infrared flashlight inspection: Due to the curved surface of the camera, an infrared flashlight will produce a very obvious red reflection.
Anti-spy apps: These apps, also known as camera detectors, primarily work by detecting whether there are cameras connected to the same WiFi network.
However, these apps have some drawbacks; not all spying devices connect to WiFi, as some cameras temporarily store captured content on storage cards without transmitting it in real-time, making them undetectable by anti-spy software.
It is important to note that there is currently no foolproof method for anti-spying; both spying and anti-spying parties are in a constant game of cat and mouse. Using multiple methods can increase the success rate.

How to use legal means to protect yourselfIf you discover a pinhole camera spying on you, immediately report it to the police and contact the hotel management. Do not hesitate or feel embarrassed.
Those who illegally spy will face appropriate penalties, and those who illegally produce and sell pinhole cameras will also be subject to legal sanctions.
There are legal provisions regarding the sale of spying devices. For example, Article 283 of the Criminal Law of the People’s Republic of China states: Illegal production or sale of specialized spying equipment or equipment for eavesdropping or photographing can result in imprisonment for up to three years, detention, or control, and fines; for serious cases, imprisonment of three to seven years and fines may apply.
Legal provisions also exist for behaviors that infringe on personal rights, such as the Public Security Administration Punishment Law of the People’s Republic of China, which states that peeping, secretly filming, eavesdropping, or disseminating others’ privacy can result in fines and detention.
Article 1033 of the Civil Code states: Unless otherwise provided by law or explicitly consented to by the rights holder, no organization or individual may engage in the following behaviors. These behaviors include entering, filming, or peeping into others’ residences, hotel rooms, or other private spaces; filming, peeping, eavesdropping, or publicly disclosing others’ private activities; filming or peeping at others’ private body parts.
