The Dance of Improvisation: The Unity of Body Awareness in Creation, Performance, and Appreciation

The Dance of Improvisation: The Unity of Body Awareness in Creation, Performance, and Appreciation

Dance Notes, #15

Today (0401) morning:

Self-measurement through the body’s usual perceptions, sliding into the dormant or unconscious places.

Continuously expanding the amplitude and subtlety in different dimensions of perception through practice, unfolding self-awareness in a stable and light consciousness.

Relaxed yet firm.

Determined yet light.

Emotionally driven, rationally driven, etc.

Refining perception is accumulated over time in various daily practice mediums. Being in it, furthering self-awareness, thus reopening oneself. With sincerity and courage.

Being in it, furthering.

Heart and surroundings, confronting each other.

In labor, seeing the state of consciousness. Observing methods and qualities. In my mind, constantly retrieving memories, reflecting on those who labor, especially my parents.

Labor is also a form of dance, using props, functional dance. Labor has a bodily compositional structure. In the scenes of laboring with my mother, I constantly reflect and become aware of her state.

Willpower, energy, amplitude, repetition, precision, focus, density, etc. My mother is practicing in her labor.

Today (0406) afternoon:

Conducted two rounds of improvisational awareness with close people around me and myself during labor, initiating a certain understanding of others and myself within the dance.

Yesterday (0407) evening:

Excessive rationality can block the flow of perception, using intuition. Initial assumptions dissolve in the generation and progression of intuition.

Focusing on self-awareness. The clear and unclear. From this, a world (realm) emerges.

Today (0408) morning:

Opening body awareness by looking at the tip of my nose in a calm, even, slow, and deep manner, flowing into intuition, expressing the feeling of body awareness points (legs connected to feet, arms connected to hands, etc.) in a pen-like manner, encountering inner memories or recent stays in the void and on the ground, meeting the present, refining after rapid awareness, becoming clear and visible. Then, inadvertently returning to daily life.

The spring tree crowns outside the window, lush and vibrant, sway gently in the wind.

Starting from a point in the heart: extending it, like the second stroke on a canvas responding to the first stroke, generating in the present; transforming and reversing it, giving it reflection, supplementation, and support.

Round and clear, perhaps seeing a point’s surroundings, forming a spherical world, rich and growing.

Dance includes experiencing body composition.

During improvisation in dance, the creation, performance, and appreciation of body awareness are unified.

Emotions and feelings, the forms generated by conditions, can reveal one’s state of consciousness, responses, and behaviors.

Where does it come from? From where does it arise? The refined, dissipated in the weathering. Wind, rain, fog, lightning, clear clouds, and night moons, the ancient well is calm.

Emotions and feelings are precious resources.

To perceive it, broadly and subtly perceive it;

To express it, the vitality of life freely emanates.

As a child, I moved a piece of cactus and a root of evergreen from the neighbor’s roadside garden. Later, the cactus grew to bloom, robust and weathered; the evergreen grew tall and vigorous. Those flat orchid roots that were moved grew into patches along the slope, blooming white flowers. The images of the three remain in my memory, fading in the present time and space.

The descendants of that cactus are now growing taller by the roadside.

Fingers of Buddha, divided into three pots. After several years, I hope they will bloom and bear fruit.

Plants have their forms, visible from the perspective of “humans,” revealing their life characteristics. Like the red sweet potato vines that thrive endlessly. Like the aerial roots of Southeast Asian banyan trees that can be guided to form a bridge. Like the cactus that grows thorns in response to drought.

At the snow line, the tower yellow blooms once in a lifetime.

Self-replication of plants, continuous self-replication over the years. In their growth timeline, different small, medium, and large scales are infinite extensions of similar structural replication.

This generative quality, different plants have different temperaments and postures, containing the shadow of growth trajectories, including upward and relaxation.

Walking in Huanhua Creek Park, observing the “dance” of plants, I feel the above.

Today (0413) afternoon:

Visualizing my favorite plants, the three are: lotus, ginkgo, and dawn redwood, improvising in dance; then I performed improvisational dance with the trunks, crowns, and roots of the trees.

Relaxation and control are a pair. It is a state and condition of consciousness, reflected in the body: first, the points of effort in breathing, the degree of effort, how the airflow enters and exits the body, and which areas of the body it passes through; second, the distribution of muscle tension, the points of effort, and the self-measured degree of effort.

Further understanding of “relaxation and control” may need to focus on “attachment.” Without attachment, all is possible; with virtue, one enters the void.

Then, attachment and will are also a pair.

Today (0414) evening:

Looking back, I can see the flowing body shape and its inner inadequacies during the close and fitting process. I see the progress of everyone in tonight’s class, from the past and the accumulation generated in this class. I see many shining moments, still moved. Time does not deceive “me.”

The state of animals. Generally, there are two types: one is at rest and alert, the other is in action. The state has corresponding forms, revealing the energy within and outside.

In the geological era of the Earth, biological evolution, from the ocean to land and air; from invertebrates to the earliest fish, bony fish, from invertebrates to vertebrates.

How do these processes inspire us?

Today (0415) morning:

In the emotional vignette section, each person selects three emotions, intertwining daily states with dance, coordinating sound and movement.

In the later segment, I was able to calm down and reawaken through Jia Yong’s “Praise of the Twenty-One Mothers,” previously: happiness, anger, sadness, peace, worry, tension.

In the forest, different, rich plants and animals, and inorganic materials, countless colors, shapes, and forms, and interactions (dialogues) in parts. The whole, specific, and vivid interweaving forms an ecosystem.

Emotions and feelings manifest in different positions in the “forest”; if not held onto, they dissolve into it.

Vision, looking in, looking out, moving in different dimensions. Seeing connections, countless connections.

In dance, we are all experienced. With rich, uniquely individual life materials, experience means accumulation of richness, habits, and more.

In dance, perceiving and reflecting on life materials, then (simultaneously) composing and reconstructing them, transforming and re-entering daily life.

Copying, improvising, and programming are the three-stage cycles of dance. Among them, improvisation is the most generative.

Guan Pinghu’s “Ping Sha Luo Yan” is the calligraphy of literati and the gardens of literati, spacious yet tight, Confucian scholars too; Wu Zhaoji’s “Hu Jia Eighteen Beats,” “Fishing Song,” “Remembering Old Friends,” “Water Fairy Dance” are the high-minded, free-spirited, and hermit-like.

I am you, I am me. I am you all and we.

Master Jinghui (1933-2013): “In the process of practice, empty the heart, dismantle the walls and barriers within, and dissolve the thousands of troops and horses in the heart, and our small space will achieve peace. When the small space is peaceful, it is the present law of nirvana.”

The power of thoughts and their different forms of presence.

When the thought power starts, it will accumulate karma, and it can also generate wishes, mobilizing and expressing life energy under the wish power.

Mantras and affirmations have both meaning and sound levels.

Emptiness and existence have different states when corresponding (recognizing).

XU Tiantian (b.1975) faced the Jinyun quarry and saw a new emptiness.

The negative space opened by different “emptiness” has the possibility of entering new content flow, depending on the shape.

Reversal is the movement of the Dao.

Master Jinghui: “So what is the spirit of Zen? It is to encompass the righteous spirit of Confucianism, the pure spirit of Daoism, and the harmonious spirit of Buddhism within the spirit of Zen, encompassing the culture of Zen tea. The spirit of righteousness, purity, harmony, and elegance is the concept of Zen tea culture.”

Under the clear sky, the “Heavenly Sea Whale” swims by.

San Sheng Xiang Hongsha Village is a shallow hill in the plains.

At Qingyuan, the willow trees of spring are awakening, the lotus pond is waking up, and the artist group exhibition at Qingyuan Art Center.

This place is like a courtyard in the city, where you can see the distant Shufeng 468 resuming work.

In natural light, looking at the outside world with today’s and historical “me.”

Following the seasons, spring, summer, autumn, and winter.

Following the morning and evening, the rising sun and the setting moon.

Dance among the five aggregates, escaping suffering.

Those colors, green, red, orange, purple.

Those lights, white, black, and colorful.

Compassionate navigation and wise action, the heart sails with a single sail.

Heart Image Flower Yesterday (0401) evening, I participated in the eight-hour chanting for the first time.In nearly two hours of continuous (pause), I experienced deep respect and sincerity, feeling focused and continuous during the chanting, gaining new insights.Heart images manifest as flowers, sounds, and traces,Does the world hide or not hide?Lotus friends are peaceful.20250402

“Speaking of the deeper ‘no thought arising,’ that is, good and evil, right and wrong, self and others, all opposing thoughts dissolve. Because there is good and evil, or say stop evil and do good, that is still a thought, that is not ‘no thought arising,’ ‘no thought arising’ is no thought.” (Master Jinghui)

In Chinese, in traditional culture, there are many sayings and methods.

Like: literature carries the Dao, art and Dao are one, borrowing false to cultivate the true, acting without attachment to give rise to the heart, aligning with the Dao to achieve truth.

“Sharing great love, transforming life” is grounded in the concrete and minute.

“The beneficiary is also the helper.” (Huang Xiaohong)

In April 2024, I read the “Buddhist Studies Digest” magazine at Lezhi Baoguo Temple, paying attention to Lanzhou Junyuan Temple, noting the abbot Master Liyin. Simple, particularly simple, evoking admiration.

Simply searching for Master Liyin (b.1967) ‘s resume, it is roughly as follows:

In 1996, founded Lanzhou Buddhist Bookstore.

In 1998, founded Lanzhou Wen Si Study House.

In 1999, founded “Buddhist Studies Digest” magazine (monthly).

Undergraduate at the Chinese Buddhist Academy, later studied at Renmin University in the Department of Religious Studies.

Master Liyin (b.1967): “Many people who learn Buddhism often fall into the trap of attaching to principles and neglecting practical matters (turning Buddhist teachings into metaphysics), or attaching to forms and getting lost in the practices (formalizing the practice). In fact, a true Buddhist disciple’s daily practice is to realize impermanence while washing dishes and sweeping the floor, to cultivate compassion in workplace socializing, making every action a spark to light the heart. When one’s every gesture naturally reveals compassion and tranquility, that is the most vivid interpretation of Buddhist teachings. Therefore, the core of learning Buddhism is not only to understand the theory of Buddhist teachings but also to transform life and purify the heart through concrete actions.”

“From the perspective of Buddhism, its fundamental spirit is the wisdom of prajna, which is emptiness. What is the ultimate goal of emptiness? It is harmony. Inner and outer harmony, self and others harmony, heart and matter harmony, worldly and transcendent harmony, ultimately it is a ‘harmony’ word.” (Master Jinghui)

“When confused, the master guides; when enlightened, one guides oneself.” (The Platform Sutra of the Sixth Patriarch)

Using “boat” as a medium, in director Hu Jinquan’s “Empty Mountain Spirit Rain” (1979), the precious handwritten scripture “The Awakening of Faith in the Mahayana” is also a “boat.”

Mid-spring tour. In Longquan Mountain, wildly basking in the winter sun that has come. In the mountains, it seems like enlarged shallow hills in southeastern Sichuan. Walking along the ridge, overlooking the valley, looking at the nearby mountains. Mainly pink, green, yellow, and white.

In the darkness, there is the power of the starry sky. A re-recognition of darkness.

In the light, there may be a sense of coercion, causing others to get sunburned. A multi-dimensional understanding of light.

Fruits from Xinjiang, Gansu, and Sichuan Panzhihua have received good sunlight and temperature differences between day and night, making them sweet and good. Darkness and light are inseparable.

In mid-spring, the north wind is fierce, traveling through the south and north.

In the east and west, spring in March, after the Qingming rain, summer.

Exploring a place, deeper is participation and integration; different participation and integration are different connections.

Today (0409) at Baoguang Temple, for the first time, the temple space gives a sense of peace and weight.

(However, there is a sense of wandering in my heart, similar to the feeling after reading the book “Baoguang Temple” a few days ago.)

Yesterday (0410) afternoon, I flipped through the book “Baoguang Temple” again, gaining new insights.

That day, in the evening light of Huanhua Creek Park, when closely observing Ren Xuhua’s calligraphy, I discovered that my high school Chinese teacher’s chalk writing was in the Wei Bei style. The teacher’s name was Zheng Tiegang.

From Ren Xuhua (b.1973) ‘s Wei Bei calligraphy work “Du Fu’s ‘Di Ming Fu'” I selected six characters to imitate: fate, use, say, thus, rock, sweet.

I discovered two sentences: one is: fate says rock, use thus sweet. One is: fate uses, thus says: rock sweet.

“The origin of all laws lies in this thought of the present moment, and the destination of all laws still lies in this thought. Our practice must tightly grasp this thought of the present moment, starting from this thought of the present moment, there is an operable place.” (Master Jinghui)

The documentary “Zen Practitioners” (2019) at about 37’32” said by Master Jinghui, “Go have tea,” made me cry.

Colorless, like the spring breeze brushing the face

There is an inner force that needs to be experienced with different strokes and movements of writing. In this piece of writing, there are six parts. Besides the visible five parts, there is also a part that runs on paper with a pen that has a ball but no ink, colorless yet with a trace.

Today my color, I hope it is colorless. Those colored and shaped are some methods needed internally. And colorless is the lightest, leaving no trace on paper. Just like the heart, coming and going freely, light as a spring breeze brushing the face.

Circle

Cycle, rise and fall, lasting as a circle. Its stability comes from relaxing and following the natural flow in the present moment.

Observing yesterday’s writing through the paper back, prompting the initial drawing of different circles. These circles continuously trigger further.

Circles combined with lines. Circles combined with human hands. Circles assimilated with body shapes.

As eyes are circles. The probing light emitted from eyebrows falls like a ball of yarn in the sky, hanging freely on the endless cliff.

Everywhere is an eye, even the ankles begin to see.

Self-Portrait #8

Drawing a selfie taken today. I took pictures from the left, middle, and right angles, and drew one.

From the selfie, I see the current state and preservation.

From the self-portrait, I see the inner qualities of myself.

Determined, upright, fiery, these are included within.

In the future, I may occasionally draw and write after taking selfies.

Listening to my own inhalation, exhalation, and resting

Earlier, during the rehearsal and performance of the modern dance “http:”, Sister Li sang “There Are So Many People in This World” (Mo Wenwei), and I have listened to it many times recently. This morning, seeing the check-in topic, I listened to it twice again. In fact, it has an inner push similar to Wang Zhida’s “Three Treasures Song”.

Some songs, like some dance movements (flows), when they come, they will leave. Clouds come and go. The ancients said, great sound is rare. Perhaps it can be understood as “no attachment, giving rise to the heart,” which is very precious and rare awareness.

From time to time, the heart moves from listening to music to resting in silence, the tranquility of the environment (the morning spring bird calls) is refreshing.

Today’s BGM, then practice listening: in the calm, even, slow, and deep breathing, listen to my own inhalation, exhalation, and resting.

Observing the world (translated by Kumārajīva), observing self-sovereignty (translated by Xuanzang).

In ordinary life, the Thousand-Hand Guanyin

My mother, in her labor and life, is a rich mine of awareness in movement. She passes through, exists yet is unaware, has yet to be conscious, completely unaware. As for the subconscious, that is another vast world.

Wang Liping’s composition of “The Prelude to Dream of the Red Chamber” (lyrics: Cao Xueqin, sung by Chen Li), gently pushes and suddenly, the soft power surges. The low tones support the upward.

The low and lingering in the piece, shoulders like mountains.

Thinking of my mother, her many images, and states.

She says she is “busy all day like a dazed rabbit,” with a thousand and one things to do.

She is the Thousand-Hand Guanyin in ordinary life.

Heart Energy

The flow of heart energy. It is internal composition. Thousands of variations, flow also means stagnation, the two are inseparable. In between, the flowing potential, the expressed power, speed, and segmentation, the combined internal texture and external form, all streams return.

Heart energy reveals itself in expression. If one can adjust heart energy, it will be the return of vitality. Labor and creation are inseparable.

At this moment, reflecting on some scenes from movies and documentaries. Interspersed with recent impressions from browsing video platforms, martial arts, cargo ships passing through the Arctic Ocean.

Daily Observations and Self-Awareness

There are generally two types of daily observations. Relaxed, engaged, and repetitive observations, seeing one’s positive tendencies or obsessions and likes; avoiding, hiding, and skipping observations, seeing one’s negative tendencies or non-attachment and dislikes. Neutral observation may involve its breadth, vision, courage, and great love (including self-love), which are activated and practiced.

Daily observations, the various perspectives of oneself projected and avoided can unfold self-awareness.

Daily observations can occur in the process of looking in the mirror, recalling oneself. At the same time, casually looking at one’s current appearance and state.

Wild Yak, Parrot, and Whale

A forty-year-old brown wild yak, Kuanmo (male), one day shared the same dream with a three-year-old parrot, Little Sun (female), and a fifteen-year-old whale, Little Sea (male).

In the dream, they met at the edge of a primitive forest in Motuo, Tibet, near the ancient ocean of Yatis. There, the blue of the sky, the green of the earth, and the blue of the sea are slightly different from the real Earth. The colors are gentle and bold, and the textures are rare and unique.

Little Sun perched on a tree, said to Little Sea in the water, “I am your former self.”

Little Sea asked Kuanmo, “Are you my future self?”

Buddha

Using one word to express my recent state and inner world. Previously, during lunch around the table, Teacher Hu Bingshuang asked everyone, and my answer at that time was “simple.”

Today, facing this question again, after careful consideration, I chose the word “Buddha.” “Buddha” means an enlightened person. The human condition, birth, aging, illness, and death. The human state, greed, hatred, ignorance, arrogance, doubt, etc. The inner world and the outer world unfold in the process of being and being. What angles, methods, and attitudes do we take to respond?

My perception of the word “Buddha” in the past may not have been so everyday, friendly, or integrated into my life flow. In 2024, participating in the Spring and Autumn Buddhist retreats at Lezhi Baoguo Temple, my understanding of the word “Buddha” gradually unfolds in daily life.

Sixth Patriarch Huineng (638-713) said, “The Dharma is in the world, not apart from worldly awareness.” Master Taixu (1890-1947) first advocated “Humanistic Buddhism,” Master Xingyun (1927-2023) continued it at Fo Guang Shan, and Master Jinghui (1933-2013) promoted it in living Zen.

When I write the word “Buddha” with colored pencils, I use whichever pencil I grab to write the word “Buddha.” In the writing, I feel how I use the pen. The writing reflects the heart’s trace. The written part contains white and light yellow pencil marks. Finally, I summarize the word “Buddha” with a golden acrylic pen.

Every time I write, every stroke, pause, force, speed, and way of using the pen reflects the state of my thoughts. The world of the word “Buddha” contains various states of humanity, with countless characters within.

The word “Buddha” exists in daily life, in life, and also approaches the state of forgetting both the subject and the object in a single awareness.

Close Your Eyes

After quietly viewing Lü Jun’s painting exhibition, at the long table gathering, I closed my eyes and listened to Ji Guang from Dazhou playing the guqin. When listening to the first piece “Late Spring,” the sound of water brewed by the tea master intertwined with the music, new leaves greening, soothing yet lively.

The flowers in the paintings and the greenery in the space outside the canvas. At the long table gathering, the sound of the guqin and the taste of tea in the spring created a holistic flow in the space.

Closing my eyes, the feeling between my eyebrows is different. Yesterday (0401) during the chanting, the feeling between my eyebrows had two general energy states. One is relatively tight, defensive, and blocked. The other is settled, relaxed, and continuous. In the picture, I drew the state of my eyebrows.

Writing reflects the heart’s trace, colors and forms reflect the heart’s state.

It is preset, starting from the initial point, and also adjusting and generating in the moment of improvisation.

In clarity and repetition, awareness is strengthened.

Where the Heart is at Peace is My Home

Perhaps, in the stage of longing for travel, it is to increase perceptual materials. The richness brought by the places visited accumulates to a certain extent, and one begins to think about the precision and subtlety of perception and practice integration, seeing one’s understanding of life and the needs of life state. For me, traveling is a life perception practice unfolded in time and space.

Can the travel place and daily living place overlap? It is about balancing curiosity and peace of mind. Where the heart is at peace is my home, also the place I most want to go.

From the perspective of “where the heart is at peace is my home,” looking back at the places I have been (listed without order):

The small old tree bird pond in the middle of Nanhua Temple; sitting in front of the Tang Hall of Fo Guang Temple, watching the solid and calm distant mountains in autumn; walking in Huanhua Creek Park on summer nights, listening to the calls of herons and insects; in the summer sun of Turpan, the ancient city of Jiaohe evokes thoughts of their living space flow; at this moment, the weather in Rongcheng is fine, surrounded by various bird calls; wandering in the concrete road network among the shallow hills of my hometown, that sense of wandering between heaven and earth; the lake of Namtso, which is hard to approach, the distant plateau sky is blue; the primitive forest of Motuo, I really want to walk well in it; within two days, encountering the rain and fog clearing of Huangshan; discussing Dao in the tea room of the Taoist temple in Zhongnan Mountain, Dayi; at Lezhi Baoguo Temple, listening to the abbot’s teachings in the reception room, circling the peace tower three times, sitting quietly and imagining in the heart-resting pavilion, kneeling to listen to the “Evening Bell Verse” in the bell and drum tower, kneeling to repent and make vows before the Buddha statue; the plants on the windowsill, spring, summer, autumn, and winter; the old city of Quanzhou, having been there for a day, feeling it is the city that fits me best; the azaleas of the Hengduan Mountains (not yet visited); the brave climb of that isolated peak on Mount Haituo in Beijing; the snow of the third grade in elementary school; my grandmother’s funeral; assisting a senior brother’s family in the lotus hall of Chengdu Funeral Home; the moments of improvisational dance in the art workshop of Mianyang Guliankang Rehabilitation Hospital; the peaceful heart meditation at the Pure Land Academy; etc.

Colorful returns to colorless,

Gratitude and Repentance, Vows and Actions

Gratitude and repentance both point to vows and actions. Is this “wish” the pure and natural place of the original heart? “Wish” is return and direction, “wish” is to cultivate blessings and increase blessings, “wish” is to eliminate disasters and dispel delusions.

Gratitude and repentance bring out “connection.” The internal connection state of “I.” The connection state of “I” with the world around and afar (people, living beings, inorganic matter).

Those important (beautiful and painful, etc.) connections, I attempt to recall and list (mostly in my heart):

The simplicity, resilience, and silence of my parents, my mother’s high voice and cheerfulness, my father’s shyness and jokes, Peng’s sunshine.

“I” in such a life journey. “I” is fundamentally “no I,” “I” is a state of “wish” and its manifestation. “I” must emit and bear what kind of “wish,” “I” is becoming that kind of “wish.”

Small towns, county towns, Beijing, Chengdu.

Childhood farm work and housework, extracurricular reading in high school, contemporary art and cultural scenes in university.

Labor, culture, contemporary art, writing, modern dance, dance therapy (art therapy), Buddhist layperson, etc.

What do these contexts tell me?

A recurring image in my mind: when my parents were building the second house (they built three in total), my mother took me to sift river sand in the mixing barrel on a summer afternoon when I was still half asleep (she hadn’t slept at all). Similarly, in the scorching summer, she led the family to pick corn in the cornfield and thresh in the rice paddies.

She is a warrior of life, stronger in will than I.

Ripples of Thought

Ripples of thought linger deeper in the eyebrows. The brightness in the eyes has a stagnation and fearfulness. The state of breathing seems to linger lightly on the lips and corners of the mouth. The skin shows signs of emotions passing through.

The entire head and face are the past tense and present continuous of “weather.”

Reading and Learning, Opening to Each Other

Reflecting on my reading history, I have reflected on my reading behavior. Reading is a way of learning. In everyone’s learning journey, one can look back at their life process.

What constitutes nourishing life learning and reading? Is it reinforcing the slowly clarifying path? How do reading and learning accompany the growth of life, providing nourishment?

In my current life journey, I have the following reflections:

1. “All things are inferior, only reading is high.” This can easily lead to a waste of vitality, generating arrogance, detaching from reality, overemphasizing thinking, and not being able to enter perception and fully observe life.

2. In difficulties and pauses, seeking internal strength takes precedence over learning from the outside.

3. The quality of learning, I hope to be in a state of lightness, density, clarity, and freedom, opening to each other.

After not eating vegetables and fruits for a long time, when I eat them, my body feels a “thirsty thirst.” “What drink do I most want today?” I first thought of bean juice, then thought of the fresh sugarcane juice bitten out in my mouth.

Then I thought, how to blend it, previously steamed honey apple cubes.

Starting point: the coolness and tranquility of the banyan tree shade on North Street of the Lantern Temple.

The first brew of green tea cools down, after a small (medium) sip, I eat two water chestnuts, looking at the new green tree crowns near the window, looking for a while, slowly shifting my gaze.

Simplicity and Compassion

Simplicity and the compassion behind it. Perhaps it is a theme I have practiced since childhood. (Omitting some thoughts.) In the process, perhaps for the feelings of others, I have compromised myself, which can form a certain accumulated energy (vitality). Some people say I “endure and accept,” which sounds like an insult, but indeed I would rather hurt myself than hurt others.

The endurance and responsibility of resilience have always been there; however, the joyful heart of resilience is something I have only recently begun to consciously realize.

How to neutrally view the sadness, pessimism, and despair revealed in “reverse,” transforming and converting them into a joyful heart?

This morning (0408), I only realized in my body what light and relaxed breathing are, what awareness relaxation in breathing is. Loving oneself is reflected in the fact that yesterday (0407) in the topic “What drink do I most want today?” I took time to observe and answer it seriously and specifically.

Seeing the ups and downs, seeing the helplessness. In the twenty-one days, I took three selfies, all taken, seeing my state, both similarities and differences. Seeing the willingness and energy of change accumulating. Letting it be, reducing the burden for others, also reducing the burden for myself.

Life is “deceiving” me, I am “deceiving” life. The word “deceive” has rich connotations, as if viewing it as a neutral word, a neutral action. The interaction between life and “me” is filled with fog; if further in, feeling the interaction between life and “no me,” that true nature of the heart, relaxing internally during breathing, carefully perceiving the tension and stiffness in breathing, noticing from every detail of “pixels.”

Gift: Good at “deceiving” oneself, guiding life.

Before the beginning of summer, in the early spring season, there was a nationwide windy day. After the rain, the sky cleared, the wind was strong, and the temperature dropped; I wanted to make a steamed dish, and I conceived a food in my mind.

Let’s try: honey pineapple block yam segments.

Heavenly Sea Whale

I have listened to Yaima’s “Force” many times, to improvise it in dance.

I conceived two points: one is to jump out from the emitted point, from small to medium to large; the other is to jump out the feeling of energy, light, light, and agile.

Today (0413) morning, at the Jinfu Garden Nursing Center (Chengdu), I danced in the open sky, sensing that I seem to be getting more like a gibbon.

Imagining the old Three Gorges. Then imagining earlier. “The cries of gibbons on both banks cannot stop,” “the wind is urgent, the sky is high, the gibbons cry sadly.”

Today morning, under the clear sky, the “Heavenly Sea Whale” swims by.

Pu Xuezhai’s “Good Night Song,” grounded, step by step

On the left is Chen Li’s “Prelude to Dream of the Red Chamber”; on the right is Wang Zhida’s “Three Treasures Song.” Returning to the middle, I first thought of Wu Zhaoji, then thought of Pu Xuezhai.

Today’s piece is Pu Xuezhai’s “Good Night Song,” which I am repeatedly listening to. In this piece, there is the golden sound of “golden sound and jade vibration”; although the guqin is not a metal instrument, the player’s current state expresses it through the guqin.

Pu Xuezhai plays with confidence and fullness, grounded, step by step.

Many people play “Good Night Song,” Guan Pinghu’s version of “Good Night Song” has the feeling of literati painting; he not only plays the guqin but also paints.

Listening to Wang Zhida’s “Three Treasures Song,” my heart is steadier now. Even if there is drilling above, and the subway is being repaired nearby.

Listening to Chen Li’s “Prelude to Dream of the Red Chamber,” the connotation I hear is changing; this Thursday (0417) at Mianyang Guliankang Art Workshop, the improvisation of this piece has a score in my heart.

Originally, behind a piece is everyone’s music map, a piece connects a series of pieces.

Wide and Steady

He has: the face of a chimpanzee, the arms of a gibbon, the steadiness of a plateau yak.

She has: the patience of a rabbit eating grass and the vigorous energy of a leaping one, the shoulders and limbs of a Sichuan cow.

He is: the aroma of whole wheat flour from the tree leaves of the catalpa cake, the yellow-green plump pomelo, the tower yellow at the snow line.

She is: the vigorous growth of the red sweet potato vine, hiding the cosmic brilliance of blueberries, the tower yellow at the snow line.

Father and mother, two tower yellows, wide and steady.

Note: While writing, I repeatedly listened to Yang Jinlam’s (b.1973) “Deep Love.”

Mr. Frowning’s Four Wishes

In recent years, I have self-measured “heart power.” From the stuck point, sliding to the low valley; from the low valley sliding upward. In the photo, I, seven months old, frown, roughly remembering why I frowned. This obvious beginning foreshadows that I will experience everything until now.

I want to bless Mr. Frowning:

May he practice diligently and carefully;

May he protect his heart power, cultivate blessings and increase blessings;

May his heart power manifest sincere good words, good deeds;

May he always return to intuition and the original heart.

Some, Tears, Sweetness, and Willpower

Some urgent and dangerous moments of turning danger into safety can move me to tears.

Some feelings of shame arise, gradually understanding the value of blessings; in the early morning of leaving the temple after the autumn Buddhist retreat in 2024, that bowl of water for cherishing blessings felt sweet.

Some silence is endurance, endurance is resilience, resilience comes from willpower. In my parents’ silence, there is deep willpower. The flowing energy of life and vigorous growth.

How Great Humility Is

Today (0418) evening, the modern dance drama “The Most Seven” performance’s improvised curtain call moved me to tears.

I saw everyone’s strengths, which are the completeness in their weaknesses, and the completeness is in another cycle of yin and yang, and even more, like a ring connecting us.

How great humility is. This sentence suddenly appeared in my mind.

University First Establishing Righteousness, Cultivating Harmony and Governance

The meaning of the word “cultivate” is rich: stacking and reducing, constructing and deconstructing; a house has its foundation, categories, and classifications, it has its sky; growth, development, and vitality; entering, falling off, and emerging.

In our family lineage, after the “righteous” generation, it is “cultivation.”

Every day, cultivating the Dao. Yunchao:

University first establishing righteousness, cultivating harmony and governance.

Qian Liang’s family and country use, illuminating for thousands of generations.

I Ride on the Surface of the Moon

Recently, I have been listening to Yang Jinlam’s songs more often. “The Breath of the Earth” is the tree of her life, “Deep Love” is the abundance of this life tree. “Distant Call” has a certain willpower. In “Bodhicitta,” one can hear her awareness of the emitted life energy, like the blooming lotus, and also the observation of the world and self, sinking into the “fertile soil” of flowers, the power of the earth and soil.

After listening to Yang Jinlam’s “Prayer,” and then listening to Jia Yong’s “Lotus Master Heart Mantra,” I clearly feel the difference between laypeople and monks.

At nearly eleven o’clock in the evening, riding on the road, about a kilometer listening to Jia Yong’s “Lotus Master Heart Mantra.” After the wind and rain, the yellow leaves fall from the banyan trees, the fragrance of rainwater and yellow leaves mingles. The road surface, where the construction barriers for the subway have been removed, is not yet marked, very wide, without streetlights, the newly paved asphalt road, I feel like I am riding on the surface of the moon.

He Stands Firm Like Lightning

Protection is within boundaries.

Director Xu Ke’s “The Legend of the Condor Heroes: The Great Hero” (2025) unfolds the connotation of “protection” and the protagonist’s behavioral trajectory on two levels of family and country.

Martial arts and wisdom are the guiding use of consciousness, to promote protection, to maintain the continuity of inner emotions and beliefs, creating a sense of stability; if it is a great hero, he stands firm like lightning.

The great hero guards the great.

Zen Dance Inspiration 02

I have deepened my understanding of the two ends of stillness and movement.

Deepening refers to: in stillness, I increasingly have parts that can dance slowly and evenly, standing on one leg is very stable, although I have not practiced standing on one leg regularly; in movement, speed can suddenly quicken or slow down, rapid and gentle in an instant, with some progress in strength, extension, softness, and turning.

Words and silence, movement and stillness, are all flows and transformations of consciousness.

Zen dance may be to manifest the spirit of a smile with a flower through the body.

Zen Dance Inspiration 01

Zen dance is shared by both Buddhism and Daoism. Both emphasize precepts, concentration, and wisdom, with stillness in Zen and movement in Zen.

The spiritual qualities of Zen dance may include: compassion, joy, and letting go, balance and peace, gathering energy inward, diluting the void, and also include the fierce gaze of the diamond and the awakening of the deafening.

Self-Portrait #11

Recently, I have been drawing portraits (self-portraits) more often, starting from a circle of the head. Continuously practicing handling some details of the head, I realize there is a strong self-guidance within, in shape, lines, colors, and expressions, there is an upward life energy, emerging from internalization.

While drawing, I see a person meditating on the white paper.

Letting Go of Ordinary Burdens, Dropping Water Back to the Sea

Letting go of ordinary burdens begins to realize all-pervasive awareness,

Hearing the far and near, light and heavy in the vast void.

Movement is stillness, stillness is movement, unmoving is just so,

Dropping water back to the sea, the boundless light of the Tathagata shines.

Dance Notes, #16

Hesitation and determination are one and inseparable, both are neutral, entering and exiting are behavioral states in our life trajectory.

Sliding open the amplitude of perception will lead to new discoveries, followed by new hesitations and determinations, which are flowing, maintaining an open state of awareness.

Today (0418) afternoon:

In the process of improvisational dance, the emergence of errors means we are stepping out of the original area, trying to generate new things, continuing to observe and expand perception in the process of making mistakes and going with the flow.

The emergence of errors is delightful.

The connection between words, forming a world of meaning through certain appearances, is similar to the improvisational dance response; in the flow of movement, we need to handle the connection, transformation, and pauses between “words,” forming a segment of bodily expression in time and space.

Today (0419) afternoon:

Everyone individually improvised four animals: imagined, two favorites, and the most loved. In the process and two rounds of exchanges, there was a discovery and awareness of these images, gradually becoming clear about what they mean to oneself.

Absorption. At the moment of absorption, with intuition, each moment with intuition. Viewing neutrally will be relaxed, shifting from being led away to gradually settling in the present.

Adjustment. At the moment of adjustment, with the original heart, recognizing the emptiness in each moment. From breathing and thoughts, perceiving the heavy bindings and attachments of one’s heart and nature, gradually dissolving and lightening.

True absorption, there is no inside or outside, inside and outside are one, following the natural flow. Nature is the original heart, which is inherently round and clear. No heart gives rise to great use, without attachment, giving rise to the heart.

Today (0422) morning:

In the practice of the willow (pine like drooping willow), experiencing the specific scales of control and the guidance of different body awareness points, using the entire arm after relaxing the shoulders as a practice medium, swinging.

Experiencing different scales of control, control is neutral, relaxation is also a form of control. Control and relaxation are one and inseparable.

Control and relaxation exist in the process of dissolving ignorance, guiding clarity (transparency, lightness).

Having me and no me is also one and inseparable. No me is after realizing the specific, evolving “me,” continuously becoming no me. Great has great no, small has small no, medium has medium no.

Perhaps we are accustomed to certain scales of control in certain dimensions, needing to perceive and slide open, expanding the understanding of the amplitude of “control.”

With sincerity and respect, one can truly enter the present. To some extent, in the state of awareness after letting go and no self, entering the present.

Experiencing the present thought. Awareness of the accumulation of karma and habits, and cherishing the blessings of time, one needs to be cautious and alone, continuously adjusting the flow of one’s life awareness.

Old horse knows the way!

Precisely because the old horse knows the way, in improvisational dance, one can perceive past life materials, see the nature of the heart, and generate new content in the flow of the present. After repeating many times and entering the program, it will be brought into our daily behavior.

Treasure every thought and action, treasure every improvisational dance. Every practice is writing in, accumulating “old horse knows the way,” human habits are continuously generated.

Treasure, practice is creation.

Body awareness points exerting weight and urgency, allowing body awareness points to flow in the flow of body awareness.

Let body awareness points, in the flow of body awareness, experience different flowing forms and potential. For example, smiles, streams, rivers, waterfalls, etc.

Feeling a state of willpower, in the flow of body awareness points, experiencing how willpower flows.

With courage, the heart door opens, the world and the universe gradually become vast and profound.

Today (0427) afternoon:

When the volume of improvisational sound in the circle is lowered, environmental sounds come in. The energy of “I” merges clearly and fully into the surrounding ocean, freely and safely immersing into the neutral vastness and depth.

Then, starting a round of individual improvisational dance without music, the body improvises, composing and performing simultaneously.

Starting from one’s own power (breath) state, striving for clarity (awareness), extension (reaching), and flow (continuity), forming self-dialogue in the continuous generation of awareness and subconscious expression. From such a rich state, to open up, gradually dissolving. It will be based, sourced, and have back support. It will be a truly flowing state.

The smoothness of breath, gently flowing; breath extends: stretching, flexibility, and continuity; the upward, bold, and powerful breath.

The power of return. Appreciation, re-understanding, and interactive engagement: with parents, with heaven and earth, with the inner self.

Today (0428) evening:

After two rounds of dance in music, we found that the blindfolded dance improvisation without music allows each person to enter most genuinely, dancing out dialogues with themselves, moving both themselves and the viewers.

When blind to sight and deaf to sound, the heart door opens.

Today (0429) morning:

In the process of bravely approaching sensual perception, emotions and feelings such as joy and sorrow, determination and hesitation, anxiety and relaxation, all inseparable states of consciousness, come in, facing them neutrally in calm stability, without isolation or separation, without selection or attachment.

Bravely and sincerely, with patience and compassion, face: responding to what comes, gradually dissolving.

In the body composition and performance of improvisational dance, it is a concrete, genuine life experience flowing repeatedly.

It may promote varying degrees of seeing, accepting, and transforming. Like: turning sighs into breezes, those unflowing like water, passing the edge of the desert; accepting wounds and traumas; compassion and wisdom in connection. Etc.

Internal expansion carries a certain energy. Emotions (consciousness), breath, and movement cooperate as one to stretch, extend, and rotate.

0511 afternoon:

Brave and independent, independent and brave. The connection in the internal dialogue requires courage and honesty to observe, only then will it externalize. Thus, what dissolves dissolves, and what remains remains.

Yesterday (0512) evening:

The amplitude of perception opens up, thus better experiencing the inseparability of opposites, returning to balance and peace, neutrally viewing one’s nature.

Today (0513) morning:

In the gradual opening, approaching fullness. There is no small or large, high or low, light or heavy, unfolding in neutral observation. Some new things will emerge, thus continuously birthing new life.

Heart observation is neutral acceptance. Seeing the other side of the mountain, feeling round, seeing its essence yet unmanifested, seeing the good is also the bad, the bad is also the good.

Viewing with Human Flavor

The human eye, when viewing, is a dynamic trajectory, the focus is irregularly moving and switching. More importantly, the human eye’s viewing is imbued with thought and emotion. Static or dynamic photography, they are distinguished from the physical lens of the human eye, and the creator imbues the image with human flavor in the creation process.

The creator’s thoughts and feelings at the moment of shooting attempt to restore that viewing “human eye,” that (double) human eye is not just looking, but watching, mobilizing the overall perception of the person.
